30/07 EDITED TO ADD – THIS POST WAS CHOSEN AS THE WINNER OF THE SUN £9.50 CHALLENGE 😉
YEAY 🙂
When I was contacted by The Sun to take part in their latest challenge I said yes straight away – All I had to do was to find something to spend £9.50 on that was more exciting than a holiday.
How easy is that you might say…. But after a week of deliberating, I can now confirm that it is in fact not very easy at all. A holiday is the most exciting thing for us as a family, we love spending time together as a family without any distractions like mobiles and laptops. So when I tried to find something more exciting than this, I was at a loss….
I asked the terrible twosome what they thought was more exciting than a holiday and they had some rather interesting ideas.
In the end we decided to have a holiday at home day and do lots of fun, not necessarily sensible things. So our £9.50 was spent like this:
£1.00 on a bag of marshmallows
This was our attempt to break the world record for the number of marshmallow’s you can fit in your mouth at once – Master Frugal managed a respectable 4 and Miss Frugal managed a slighly pathetic 3. I couldn’t find what the world record was but when I asked everyone on Twitter, I was reliably informed that Karin at Cafe Bebe and Heather at Notes from Lapland were experts in this field so I took a look at their blogs and was gutted to see that Karin managed 5 and Heather managed 10. We quite clearly didn’t break any world records but you have to admit that if we had managed to, then that would have been more exciting than a holiday. As it was we didn’t, so it wasn’t!
£1.00 on a giant flying disc
I’ll be honest – this would have been more fun if it wasn’t so windy lol.
£2.00 on a kite
It was so windy that we couldn’t resist spending a little bit of our money on a kite. I’ll be honest it wasn’t the best kite and we looked a bit like the poor relations next to some of the kites that were flying today but we had fun, even if our string snapped and we came home kiteless.
Note to self: You appear to get what you pay for in the world of kites 😉
£1.00 on popcorn and £1.00 on a kids DVD rental from the DVD shop for a movie afternoon
I love that our DVD shop do rentals of kids films (some of them quite new releases) for just £1.00 – way cheaper than a trip to the cinema which ends up costing over £30.00 for us all if you take into account popcorn and drinks! No wonder we don’t go very often!
£1.00 on a bottle of pop and a packet of Mentos
Speaks for itself really – something we’ve seen and always wanted to try!
£1.50 on a mini bottle of wine and 99p on an eye mask
Obviously needed at the end of the day when the kids go to bed and I treat myself to a long hot soak in a bubble bath.
Did we have more fun than we would have done on holiday? Well, I spent the day with my family having fun and enjoying each other’s company, which is what holidays are all about isn’t it? So yes, we did have more fun than we would have on holiday and we got to do it all with but none of the stressful travelling and the expense of it all.
