Cute snow picture - because it's too cold to actually go out to the car and take a photo of my emergency car bag.
I know this might sound a bit geeky but we have a bag in the back of our packed with emergency supplies just in case we ever break down or get stranded somewhere.
I thought I’d share my geekiness with you today because apparently this weekend is going to be ‘snowmageddon’ and it’s predicted that there’s going to be a lot more car breakdowns and stranded motorists than usual!
- A jacket or cardigan for us all – nothing fancy, just an ancient jacket of mine, Mr Frugal’s oldest jumper and two coats of the kids that are just about on their last legs. They’re only to use in an emergency so don’t suppose we’ll be bothered what we look like if we ever need to use them.
- A wind up torch – I’m sure we got ours from Ikea but I’ve seen them in Tescos recently too.
- A bottle of water – because thirsty children are not fun to be stuck in a car with! We often end up using this when we’re out and about if we don’t have drinks with us and we have a child who absolutely cannot wait until we get to the nearest shop or home.
- A couple of blankets to snuggle up under if it get’s cold.
- A basic first aid kit including headache tablets and a small amount of Mr Frugal’s vertigo medication.
- A notepad and some pens to keep us occupied if ever we do get stuck somewhere.
- Some packets of sweets, I used to keep some chocolate bars in it but I forgot that cars in the Summer get hot and the chocolate melted!
I’ll take a photo for you at some point and add it to this post but for now, it’s WAY too cold to venture outside even for you lovely lot.
Does anyone else have an emergency car bag? If not, might be worth making a quick one – even if you just take two minutes to throw some things in a carrier bag before you go out in the morning.
Your kids are so cute! You must be a very happy mum! Congrats!
Is this a recent thing because of the snow?
I don't have an emergency car bag thing. My car is only a C1 with the teeniest "non boot" ever and doesn't even pack a spare tyre. If I was ever going out in dangerous type conditions like mental snow I'd pack one for that journey, but not day to day for sure.
However I do keep a warning triangle and a high visability yellow jacket in my boot. I'm a nurse and I am required to stop at the scene of an accident if I came across one and help. Therefore, would need the warning triangle and high viz vest for safety. I don't have a first aid kit but it's something I've been meaning to make up for the car, but one of my best mates is an anaesthetist and he has a green doctor bag in his boot. He does have a much larger car than me though – and better skills if happened across an accident.
I have bad luck with cars lol so I usually keep something in the car regardless of the snow although some of the things I've added recently because of the weather – just in case x
What a fab idea. I want to do this x
Thanks – hope you managed to make one x
What a good idea – I shall pack one immediately – don't fancy getting caught short in a blizzard tomorrow!
Thanks very much x x
I have wellies, snowboots, water, a snow shovel, an ice scraper, salt (to melt ice), high vis jackets, some old cardies, two blankets, and a Life Hammer (for smashing car windows). Bet you feel quite normal now?!?
Ha ha yours sounds great and I definitely need to get me some salt for mine lol
I used to keep a sleeping bag in my car. A good one that folds up tiny. It came in really handy when I was stranded on the hard shoulder of the m5 for over an hour at 1am one December. One will easily wrap around 2 people and keep you warm in below zero temps. X
Thats a great idea – I may not be able to fit in the car myself by the time I add everything in lol
We had a similar sort of bag in our old car, but it (the car) died a very expensive death and it took us a while to save up for the one we have now. I just never got round to putting the bag in the new one, thanks for reminding me! We also had a micro camping stove with some tea bags and those little milk tubes like you get from Mcdonalds.
I love that idea – then I could have cups of tea x
I usually have sleeping bag, wellies, flask with water in, crisps/chocolate/cereal bars, extra socks, but this year not commuting at the moment, so only have a snow shovel in as I bought one but haven't taken it out of the car yet. Might be a problem if it gets snowed in the car!
I never thought of a sleeping bag or a snow shovel – good ideas.
Cereal and breakfast bars are great to have in the car. MadDad also takes a shovel and cat litter too.
Lets hope we never have to use it x
I've got a first aid kit, a discarded book or two, make up, and a lot of damp receipts, if that counts. The first aid kit is only because work provided them. I really should do something about this, shouldn't I?
Ha ha I have lots of soggy reciepts, a couple of empty cans and some hair bobbles as well lol
