Last year, I decided to go all sophisticated this year so I went out and bought a whole lot of new Christmas tree decorations. I didn’t buy anything too flash or spend very much money but I was really pleased with my new red and gold themed Christmas tree. In fact, for a whole day, my tree looked (almost) like one of those trees you see in a magazine – all beautifully co-ordinated and perfect.
But the problem was that I missed the homemade things that we’d made together over the years so after a day of tree perfection I ended up getting out all the old homemade decorations and adding them to the tree.
I’m feeling a lot of love for our homemade decorations right now so I thought I’d share a few of them with you….
The bell is a salt dough decoration covered in glue and rolled about in gold glitter, the snowman gift tag is just a snowman painted on a piece of card and the star is a star cut out of foam paper and decorated by the kids with glitter and sequins. I made the the cinnamon stick ornaments myself without the help of the kids and wrote about it here.
Pom poms and pipe cleaners make gorgeous tree decorations and the gingerbread man was made by drawing around a gingerbread cookie cutter and blinging him up with some glitter. The boot you can see is just a boot cut out of red card with black and white scrumpled up tissue paper stuck on it. This is one of Master Frugal’s first homemade decorations that he made in nursery so it’s one of my favourites!
We’ve even made decorations out of lolly sticks glued together in a triangle shape but I seem to have lost them this year!
And finally, because you need some chocolate on your tree, we’ll be making these again this year.
I love homemade decorations. My girls have their own Christmas tree and it's covered with beautiful little hand made decs
Oh, they are all so cute! We can't put chocolates on the tree here because of the climat. They will all melt away.
Chocolates never last on our tree!
aww lovely. Our main tree is mostly just the kids home made decs – and am loving your pipe cleaners idea.
I love your homemade decorations. I made some Christmas decs with my 2yr old this year using white PVA glue and cornflour. It makes a fab dough that air drys over night and can then be painted or even coloured in!
I love homemade decorations; they always add this magical touch to the tree
I love your homemade decorations and now I'm feeling my tree is a bit empty without them! I might have to get creating with the kids!
The chocolate idea is brilliant x
I love homemade ornaments and bet those cinnamon sticks smell gorgeous.
Your handmade decorations are lovely. Getting them out of the loft is like greeting old friends and they’re such an important part of Xmas x
I can see why you hankered after the old ones – they are gorgeous, and they all have their own backstory too. I think the cinnamon sticks are a great idea, but that snowman is my favourite!
Your homemade Christmas tree ornaments are not that late. I can still hand it up on our tree. It fits our motif. Thanks for the suggestions.
