Last Summer we spent a lovely afternoon looking around the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre in Lincolnshire but I just realised that I never got around to sharing it with you all so I’m putting that right today!
The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre houses a Lancaster Bomber (one of the only two left in the world in working order), a Douglas Dakota, six spitfires, two hurricanes and two chipmunks (not the furry variety). Most of this goes over my head but the men of the family were extremely excited at the prospect of being in close proximity to these planes and even I started to get goosebumps as the amazing tour guide brought the history of the planes to life for us.
What turns this from looking at a bunch of old planes in a giant hangar to an amazing experience are the tour guides,most of whom have first hand experience of flying some of these planes. We were all fascinated by the stories we were told and our tour guide taught my two more about what the WW2 was like to live through and fight in than they will ever be able to learn from textbooks.
We paid £18.20 for a family ticket which included the guided tour and was well worth every penny!
The centre is usually open Monday to Friday 10am until 5pm but it’s normally closed on a weekend as it houses the actual planes that are used in airshows across the country so the planes and they’re usually out at displays on weekends. I’d recommend phoning ahead before you go to find our exactly what planes will be on view on the day you’re going to avoid disappointment.
I can’t recommend the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre highly enough.
