Now, more than ever, it’s super important that we all take time to relax with our families so I thought I’d share with you 100 ways to spend time with your family to give you some ideas.
At the moment, I’m really conscious that lots of you have younger children and some of you will be really struggling for ideas on how to spend time together as a family. I’ve just spent an hour or so going through my old blog posts to write this bumper list of ideas for you so I really hope it helps you.
It’s all different for me these days as my two are older now so we have different ways of spending time together so I’m in the middle of writing a post sharing some ideas on how to spend time with your family that specifically relates to teenagers. Lots on this list work for teens too but there are lots of other things that we do together now that they’re a bit older that I haven’t included in this list so watch this space for that post.
For now though, here are 100 ideas for ways to spend time with your family…
- Plan and make dinner together.
- Make dessert together.
- Repair something that is broken which is easier than you might think if you use YouTube and Google.
- Make a personalised family bucket list using my free poster maker.
- Read a book together and take turns reading aloud – think of some related crafts that you can do once you’re done.
- Watch a show on Netflix, Amazon or my current favourite HayU.
- Make homemade playdough and play homemade Rapidough.
- Go to the zoo – either virtually or in-person if you can right now.
- Volunteer at a local rescue centre – ours always need dog walkers.
- Go to a museum, again either online or in person.
- Make unicorn poop cookie dough and then eat it while watching a good old rom com.
- Research your Family Tree.
- Plan a menu around your favourite movie or book.
- Make some homemade Christmas decorations in preparation for when the tree goes up.
- Let each member of the family take turns being the teacher. He or she gets to pick what the rest of the family has to learn.
- Recycle your old broken crayons so they can be reused.
- Go food shopping together and pick out some ingredients that no one has tasted before.
- Join a martial arts class together or get yourselves on YouTube and do Yoga from the comfort of your living room.
- Find some Yoga instruction classes on YouTube then learn some of the moves together.
- Go geocaching.
- Go on a picnic, eat it in the car if it’s too cold to eat outside.
- Turn on the music and clean the house together.
- Make a bored jar.
- Make homemade bubble mix.
- Start a Word of the Day tradition. Whoever uses the word the most during the day gets a prize.
- Do some colouring together – these printable inspirational colouring pages might be just the thing.
- Have a movie marathon weekend.
- Turn off your phone and stay away from your computer and tablet.
- Have a board game night with pizza and ice cream.
- When it rains, put your wellies on and go splash in puddles.
- Make homemade pizza for tea with everyone choosing their own toppings.
- Learn to garden. You can even start an indoor garden.
- Teach your pet a new trick.
- Go collect conkers from your local park and then do some conker crafting.
- Make pancakes for tea and have lots of toppings for everyone to choose their own.
- Have a BBQ, no matter what the weather is.
- Turn off the Sat Nav and take a scenic drive.
- Go to your local beach and collect some shells.
- Celebrate your half birthdays.
- Find a weird food holiday to celebrate.
- Learn about someone famous that you share a birthday with.
- Challenge each other to chess or checkers.
- Start an ongoing Scrabble game. Clear words away after they’ve been on the board for too long.
- Go to Pinterest and choose a random craft to create. Give it away as a gift.
- Build a LEGO set together.
- Do a jigsaw or 3D puzzle together.
- Clean up the rubbish from around your neighbourhood or local beach.
- Bake goody boxes and deliver them to your neighbours or relatives.
- Tie-dye shirts or decorate them with fabric paint.
- Create a scavenger hunt and hide clues all over your house.
- Develop your own secret language to leave messages for each other.
- Have a board game night and play all those old games you no doubt have piled up in the garage.
- Play a video game together.
- Introduce your kids to the music of your childhood or teen years.
- Introduce your kids to one of your favourite childhood movies.
- Go for a drive and play I-Spy.
- Play the alphabet game – choose a topic like animals and take turns naming items as you go through the alphabet. For example, ant, bear, cat, dog.
- Get some coloured chalk and draw all over your driveway and sidewalks.
- Get a karaoke machine and have some fun.
- Have fun with some messy science experiments.
- Come up with your own Would You Rather? Questions.
- Play charades. Let each family member write their suggestions on cards and put them into a bowl to draw from.
- Create a gratitude tree or journal.
- Decide on a hobby you can all enjoy together.
- Plan a family cook day once a week where every member of the family participates in dinner prep.
- Plan a back garden movie night.
- Have a balloon fight.
- Set up a scavenger hunt throughout your neighbourhood.
- Have a letter-writing day where you all send letters to older, extended family.
- Make fruit juice gummy bears.
- Go on a family hike.
- Do some unicorn crafts.
- Have a make your own pizza night.
- Do a movie marathon weekend, such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Jurassic Park or others.
- Have an air hockey or foosball tournament.
- Camp out in your back garden.
- Make and decorate your own biscuits.
- Play miniature golf.
- Go pick your own apples, berries, pumpkins or a Christmas tree at a farm.
- Make some printable gift certificates.
- Have a pyjama day and pamper yourselves.
- Go on a family photo walk.
- Have a back garden music festival.
- Make your own giant slip-n-slide in the backyard.
- Make sock puppets.
- Have a family pillow fight.
- Make a pillow and blanket fort and eat tea in there.
- Watch funny YouTube videos together.
- Don’t forget to visit with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and when you can’t visit in person, use Facetime or Zoom.
- Make your own board game.
- Pretend to be a tourist in your hometown or a nearby city.
- Have a good clearout and get selling to make some money and then spend it on something you can all enjoy as a family.
- Have a baking night where you bake cookies or cupcakes.
- Go bowling or make your own bowling game in the garden using empty bottles of pop.
- Go sledging.
- Make a travel journal to record all of your adventures.
- Turn on some music and have a dance party in the living room.
- Get ahead and plan some homemade Christmas gifts.
- Choose names and write letters or do a gift exchange just because at random times throughout the year.
- Make homemade lemonade.
