Last Summer Master Frugal bought me a beautiful set of mini cups and saucers from the car boot sale. He saw that I liked the set and then talked his Dad into taking him back (pretending to go to the toilet) to buy them with his own pocket money. They were beautiful but I had no clue what to do with them really so they’ve just been gathering dust – until today!
I decided to attempt to make some cakes in them using the slow cooker and seeing as they actually turned out really well, I thought I’d share my success with you. 😉
I used my recipe for Baileys Cupcakes as I’m planning on taking them to a Come Dine with me style dinner party that we’re going to tonight but you can easily use a normal chocolate sponge cake recipe for this.
I used my lovely set of tea cups for this but I’m thinking about having a charity shop hunt for some larger pretty cups to experiment with. I greased the inside of each cup with a little butter and then spooned the cake batter in, filling the cups to about two thirds full. You can see from the photo above what happens when you accidentally over-fill one!
I then popped them in slow cooker on a low heat (I poured a layer of water in bottom of the slow cooker just to be on the safe side). I put a tea towel over the slow cooker and then put the lid on top of that. Mine took about an hour and three quarters to cook but they are smallish cups. Obviously, if you’re using larger cups then it’s going to take a bit longer although I wouldn’t use cups that are too big to be honest.
I sliced of the tops so the cakes were level with the top of the cup and I’ve iced them with some vanilla buttercream and flaked a little bit of Flake on top so they looked a little bit like hot chocolate with squirty cream!
What do you think, do you fancy one?
