Usually at this time of year I feel compelled to write something about why I’m not a fan of Mothers Day and over the years I’ve even written the occasional letter or two to my lovely Mum.
I think about my Mum on a daily basis, often asking myself what she would do or wishing that I could share something with her, but this time of year is generally quite hard to deal. Usually I try to avoid as much of the Mothers Day hype as possible which is a shame as I know that my children want to show me how much they love me as much as I wish I could have the chance to show my Mum.
I didn’t think this year would be any different to my usual Mothers Day so I told the kids that I didn’t want a present and instructed Mr Frugal that if they insisted on buying me something then to make it something small and that as ever, I didn’t want a big fuss.
But then last night something happened to make me change my plans for Mothers Day this year!
I came home from work later than usual to a super clean and sparkly house courtesy of Miss Frugal who, according to her Dad, spent two hours cleaning the house from top to bottom – she even tidied and cleaned the inside of the fridge!
I bet you’re wondering why a thirteen year old would spend her Friday night cleaning a house aren’t you? You’d be forgiven for thinking that she wanted something (she usually does to be fair) as that was my first thought but actually, it was her Mothers Day gift to me because I’d told her that I didn’t want a present and that didn’t sit right with her.
She understands why I feel like the way I do about Mothers Day but wanted to do something anyway to show me how much she loves me and this was the best thing she could think of!
Her gesture made me realise that Mothers Day is as much about the kids as it is about me and that by choosing not to celebrate the day, I’m making them unhappy because they see and hear all the hype and they want to do something for me to show me that they love me on the day that they consider to be my special day.
So, thanks to my very wonderful daughter, we’re going to be celebrating tomorrow instead of me pretending it’s not happening. I’ll still think about my Mum, it’s impossible not to, but mainly I’m just going to sit back and enjoy whatever my two amazing children have planned for me.
Oh, and I’ve explained to Mr Frugal that the present buying ban has been lifted to – no point doing things by halves is there?
