I shared some word of the year ideas with you all earlier this week and today, I’m going to share what my word of the year is going to be for 2018 and explain a bit more about why I always choose a word to be my personal theme for the year.
I know I say this every single New Year’s Eve on here but I genuinely love New Year. I feel like it’s a great time to take stock of my life and review what went well in the previous year and what I want to change going forward into the next year.
For the last few years, I’ve chosen a word of the year on top of the usual New Year’s resolutions and whilst I totally get that you might think it’s a bit of a waste of time if you’ve never done it yourself, I actually think it’s a great way to set my focus for the year ahead. Genuinely, having a word of the year over the past few years has helped me to focus and achieve some of the things I wanted to achieve.
My word isn’t a specific resolution with a set target but it does represent the way I want my year to unfold and it helps me to focus on achieving it throughout the year.
Last year, for example, I chose the word shine for a number of reasons but mainly because I wanted to learn to put myself out there a bit more and do some of the things that I knew I could do but didn’t necessarily have the confidence to actually do them – this applied to my work life, my blog life and my family life.
I feel like I did really well and am proud of some of the things I’ve achieved this year that I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do in 2016. I’m also really proud that I learned to share my successes with people a little bit more than I did in the past – I still struggle a little bit as I don’t want to sound like I’m showing off but every now and again I’ll share something and that’s good enough.
A couple of times (more than a couple actually) I’ve wanted to say no to something because it was outside of my comfort zone but I’ve made myself say yes and I’m really pleased I did.
Next year, I have some very specific goals that I want to achieve in my life so I’ve chosen a word that I believe will help me to achieve them….
I’ve chosen the word BLOOM!
I chose it because, not only do I have a love of flowers of all kinds, I know that a flower is at it’s best when it’s in full bloom and that’s what I want for 2018 – to be at my best! (Please excuse the chees-iness of that last sentence!)
It’s not just me that I’ll be applying the word bloom too though!
I want my children to bloom and I want to help them to be the best that they can be and I’ll be helping them to achieve their goals in 2018.
I want my blog to bloom and to grow and although I’m super proud of myself for some of the things I did in 2017, I still have so much more that I want to achieve.
I’m one of those people who really does dream big and in the past, I’ve let the size of my dreams stop me from trying but in 2017 I decided to give a few things a go that I’d been mulling over and I’m so pleased I did. 2018 is going to be an even bigger year and I have so many ideas for things I want to do next year and hopefully, you’ll be with me every step of the way.
