Today’s post is all about calming & cost free activities for kids and is courtesy of my very lovely friend Becky’s brand new book, Create Your Own Calm! I pre-ordered my copy of it ages ago so my copy arrived on the day of release last week and I’ve already given it away and ordered a couple more copies – it’s that good!
Create Your Own Calm is a fantastic little activity book for kids age 6-12 filled with 50 fun and creative activities to help our kids calm themselves down and manage those BIG emotions such as fear, anger and anxiety more easily.
It’s written by my favourite blogger – children’s therapist and wellbeing author Becky Goddard-Hill and I genuinely think it’s a great way to encourage our kids to look after their emotional health. Becky is a long time family and budgeting writer (like me but better) and loves nothing more than a fabulous and free relaxing activity with kids.
Calming & cost free activities for kids
Cloud watching
Simply grab a blanket and you kids and head outdoors, lie on your backs and watch the clouds. Perhaps you could make up stores about what you see? Maybe you’ll all just want to watch the clouds drift by and realise just like feelings they’re constantly changing.
Bread making
Kneading relieves tension in the body and the senses taking a comforting hit from the lovely aromas. Bread making is such a relaxing activity and your kids will be so proud of their creations.
Saying thank you
Researchers in California found that people who say thank you have a 23 % reduction in the cortisol (stress hormone) in their body – making a thankyou card is a cost free exercise but one that will definitely help your child feel better
Nature crafting
Making a mandala from nature or a picture from found or fallen treasures is cost free and super relaxing and all that fresh air and nature can’t help but make you all calmer.
Try earthing
Earthing is the practice of walking, running, standing or wriggling you toes barefoot in sand, grass, mud or any natural earth. Scientists say it takes just 4 seconds of earthing for tense muscles to relax and within 30 minutes your kids will be zen!
These activities work just as well for grown-ups too so do them alongside your child for maximum chilled out family fun
Create Your Own Calm is published by Harper Collins and is available on Amazon and in all good book shops. It would make a perfect, inexpensive gift for any child and will bring those hours of entertainment as well as come crucial life skills
The first book in the Create Your Own series ‘Create Your Own Happy’ came out in 2018 has now sold over 15,000 copies
