The temperatures taken a bit of a nosedive here in the last week or so and there’s been a few times when my finger’s been hovering over the thermostat while I’ve considered whether to turn the heating on.
I’ve managed to resist the temptation so far though but I thought I’d remind myself (and you) why we don’t need to switch our central heating on in September….
It’s not really that cold yet!
I’m not the sort of person who will sit in the cold with a hot water bottle and layers of socks, jumpers and blankets on to keep myself warm so f it’s cold, I’ll put the heating on. But it’s not really that cold outside at the moment is it? I’ve just checked the temperature here right now and it’s 15 c which is a little lower than the daily average of 17 c that September usually sees but still not that cold.
Money, Money, Money.
Whilst I will always put the heating on if I’m cold, I’m always mindful of the amount of money that we spend heating the house and over the past few years our energy costs have reduced because we don’t have the heating on as much as we used to. The later we can get without putting the heating on, the more money we’ll save.
A cardigan really will do the trick at this time of year.
Going back to my first point that it really isn’t that cold, I think you’ll find that popping a cardigan on will do the trick.
The sun will probably be shining tomorrow.
My house is one of those houses that really retains the heat so if I put the heating on today, it’ll still be warm tomorrow and the weather is so changeable at the moment that the chances are the sun will be shining when I wake up in the morning and I’ll spend the day complaining about how hot I am! Just look at the blue skies from when we went to Whitby Abbey the weekend before last – the day before it was pouring down and grey!
Central Heating isn’t great for your health.
The dry atmosphere caused by central heating can dry out your eyes making them itchy and uncomfortable. It can also dry out your sinuses making you more prone to infection and on top of that it can dry your lips making them cracked and sore. Why would you want to risk all that until it’s cold enough to mean that the warmth will outweigh it all.
Warm up by going outside!
Get wrapped up and do something fun outside – you’ll soon warm up and by the time you get home, the house won’t even feel cold! We went to the woods last weekend and had an amazing time despite the fact that it felt freezing outside!
Snuggling up is fun.
We have a huge blanket that Miss Frugal and I like to snuggle up under while we watch some Netflix or a film. It’s so much more fun to snuggle than to turn the heating on.
You could just have a cuppa instead!
A nice cup of tea of hot chocolate will always warm you up and he hot chocolate especially is a much more fun alternative to turning the heating on at this time of year.
Have you turned your heating on yet?
