Did you catch last week’s five frugal things post? I mentioned that I’d treated myself to a Hello Fresh meal prep box after seeing an offer where the first box was 50% off and the next three were 35% off. I’m so easily influenced but I thought I’d track the meals we got in our box and share them with you.
To be clear, I bought my Hello Fresh box myself. 😇
I’ve used Hello Fresh before during lockdown (again, I bought the boxes myself and wasn’t working with them) and shared what I thought of them in general (Hello Fresh, overhyped and overpriced?) so I won’t go into all the detail about that as you can just pop and read my post from last year for that but basically I was a fan but ended up cancelling when I was ill as one week pretty much went to waste as I was poorly and the next week, I forgot to update our choices so we got sent the meals they chose for us and none of them were what I’d have chosen. Nothing at all to do with Hello Fresh but I paused the subscription and never went back to it.
When I saw the offer on Instagram, I thought I’d sign back up and see how it goes.
So, the first box worked out at £28.50 for five meals for the three of us which I think is actually good value on the face of it. But were the meals good value themselves?
Cauliflower Mac and Cheese with Hot Sauce
So, this one was cooked entirely by Master Frugal and it looked AMAZING…
I loved the way even slightly more complicated recipes are made easy with the Hello Fresh recipe cards – this one had quite a few components but was still simple enough to make and it all came together perfectly.
Honestly though, I’m not 100% sold on the idea of making mac and cheese any other way than our trusty family favourite Macaroni Cheese recipe though so in hindsight, I probably should have stuck to newer meals that I don’t have an amazing recipe for already. 😂 It wasn’t that it wasn’t nice though, just that it was different to our version.
Spicy Creamy Chicken Pasta
This spicy pasta dish was honestly amazing and was literally ready in less than 20 minutes!
It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a meal as much as this one that I’ve cooked at home so I’ll definitely be making it again. It does say that it’s ‘Very Hot!’ though and I really didn’t think it was – just a slight kick which was perfect.
Chicken Fajita Tortizza
We didn’t end up making this meal due to an eager teen!
Master Frugal spotted the wraps and the rocket and used them to make himself some chicken wraps for his tea rather than wait for me to finish work. I used the rest of the ingredients to make Instant Pot chicken and rice though so it really wasn’t a big deal – we just had chicken fajita style rice instead which was lovely!
Mexican Style Beef
Another really lovely meal but we did make a few tweaks.
This was really tasty but none of us like red peppers so I decided to skip the peppers and we added some beans into the recipe instead. It was super tasty but did take 45 mins to cook altogether so I’m going to need to be a bit more mindful about checking the cooking times before I choose meals as I do prefer the simpler ones.
So that’s my week of Hello Fresh meals – for what I paid, I’m pretty pleased with it.
You can try it for yourself using my refer a friend code CASBAIL (try HS-YOWO4LVY3 if that doesn’t work, there are two different codes showing in my account for some reason) and you’ll get £20 off your first box so you can see if you love it as much as I do. To be fair, you can even try it for that first box and then cancel it regardless and you get a cheaper week of meals.
