As you probably know, I'm a huge fan of my slow cooker - it makes life easier for me as a working Mum and it saves me money because it's cheaper to use than the oven.I say it's cheaper to use because that's what I've always been told - that it costs around the same as a household lightbulb to run and is much cheaper than the oven which is rated as one of the most expensive appliances in the house to run.Even though the question is probably up there in the top five questions that I get asked, I've never actually looked into just how much cheaper because I have no idea how to compare the … [Read more...]
What we’re eating this week {8th March 2015}….
After last week's rather wasteful shopping trip and cobbled together meal plan I'm back in the game this week with a nicely organised meal plan which was planned in advance as it should be.We seem to have a really busy week this week so I suspect there'll be a bit of chopping and changing but we have enough in that we should be able to get away with that without having to pop to the shop. Here's what we have planned.... MondayI had some prawns in the freezer so I made a quick prawn curry tonight for tea although I may have cheated a teeny bit as I used two of the jars of curry … [Read more...]
Just putting this out there – I really don’t like Mother’s Day very much….
I'm not a huge fan of Mother's Day.Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to being pampered for the day and I'm more than OK with having the kids make me homemade cards and give me breakfast in bed but Mother's Day just isn't the same since my Mum died 10 years ago this year.To some, Mothers Day is just one not particularly important day but to someone like me who's lost a mother, it's a day (with a very long build up to it) that makes me focus on what I've lost and what I don't have any more.Top of the list of the reasons why Mothers Day isn't a great time for me is the constant … [Read more...]
Five Frugal things I’ve done this week to save money {6th March 2015}….
I thought I'd struggle to write a Five Frugal Things post this week because it feels like it's been an expensive week but actually, on reflection it hasn't been as expensive as it could have been.... Five frugal things I've done this week: 1. I went out for a meal and on to the pictures with the girls this week. Not very frugal, I know but it was a lot of fun and not as expensive as it could have been as we timed it for happy hour at the restaurant we were going to (2 courses for £8.95), went to the local cinema rather than one of the big chain cinemas (£4 a ticket instead of £9 ish) and … [Read more...]
Homemade Polenta Fries….
For those of you who don't follow my meal planning blog, Meal Planning Made Easy, I thought you might like to have a quick drool over my new favourite food - homemade polenta fries.Polenta fries are a delicious alternative to normal fries and they're relatively cheap too - 74p worth of polenta did plenty of fries for us all! All I do is slice the polenta and coated them in olive oil sprinkled on some seasoning and popped them in the air fryer until they looked golden (15-20 minutes). You could just cook them in the oven on a high heat if that's easier for you though.Don’t miss … [Read more...]
Bonding with my boy….
I really think it's important to have one to one time with my children - as much for my benefit as for theirs and as I mentioned before Christmas, Miss Frugal and I have starting a regular date night once a week. We've agreed that every Friday night we'll go somewhere or do something together, just the two of us.So far, we've been for hot chocolates at Costa, make-up shopping, window shopping for clothes, wallpaper sample hoarding and we've had movie nights and spa nights at home. It's not that difficult to find things to do together because I understand her completely and the things … [Read more...]
