I remember when I was growing up, my mam used to have a cleaning schedule - not because she was a neat freak but because she wanted to make sure that over the course of a month, everything got done.I used to do something similar but gradually, over the last year or so, I've stopped following my schedule which means that rather than doing little and often, I regularly end up having a big blitz which obviously takes up a chunk of time that I'd rather be using to do something other than cleaning.I've decided I'm starting it again though so I've written out my two week cleaning plan (yes … [Read more...]
What we’re eating this week….
It's ridiculous how fast time is flying by at the moment isn't it?I'm sat here writing our meal plan and shopping list but it seems like only five minutes ago that I was writing last weeks! I'm still really tired but now I have a cold too so this week's plan is going to be almost as lazy as last week's was I'm afraid with comfort food all the way.... MondayRoasted veggies but I'll add some chicken or sausages to it I think and any leftovers will be added to cous cous for lunch the next day. TuesdayToad in the hole WednesdayBarbecue pulled pork ThursdayI'm not sure … [Read more...]
My Favourite Instagram photo of the week – a birthday selfie….
<div align="center"><a href="https://www.frugalfamily.co.uk/" title="The Diary of a Frugal Family"><img src="https://www.frugalfamily.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/instagram-image-badge1.png" alt="The Diary of a Frugal Family" style="border:none;" /></a></div> I know I'm always saying this but I take a lot of photos, many of which I post to Instagram each week. There's often a photo I post that either has more of a story behind it that I can tell on Instagram or that I want to share on here but it doesn't really warrant a whole post of it's own if you know … [Read more...]
Life without a microwave….
Back at the start of July our microwave died and I confidently told Mr Frugal that we could quite easily manage without replacing it, he was equally as confident that I would change my mind and we'd be microwave shopping within the month. It wasn't really a cost issue that made me decide I didn't want to replace the microwave as you can get a nice one for under £50 and the running costs are minimal (on average £8.00 a year). It was actually more of a space thing because although my kitchen isn't small, there never seems to be enough worktop space and our old microwave took up valuable … [Read more...]
Out of school activities – how do you choose….
Now that we're two weeks in to the new school year, we're starting to get all the leaflets and hype about all of the various out of school activities that our children should be doing. We've had leaflets sent home from school, leaflets through the door and even some recommendations in the weekly school newsletter and honestly, there's so much choice that you could easily be doing something after school every day and at weekends and still not fit them all in!My two have tried out lots of out of school clubs and activities since they started school but if I'm honest, they've given most of … [Read more...]
It all adds up….
One of the ways that we save up for special occasions and treats is to save all of our small change. At the moment we're saving 1p's, 2p's, 5p's and 10p's but when we're feeling a bit flush (usually around pay day ;-)) we also save 20p's and there may even be the occasional 50p thrown in for good measure. We save them in three vases that sit on the kitchen windowsill - some people have herbs or flowers, we have money! When they get full, we take them along one of the machines in our local supermarket where we change them and get cash. I know the machines usually charge around 8p for … [Read more...]
