I don't know about your child's school but ours recommends that we read with our children for at least 15 minutes a night. We also have spellings to learn each week and about an hours worth of actual homework each week to complete.Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with helping my children to learn and I genuinely believe that it's as much my responsibility as it is the schools to provide them with a well rounded education. But, if I'm honest though, I don't read with them every night. In fact, I probably read with them less than once a week - does that make me a bad parent?I … [Read more...]
A mince themed meal plan….
Hands up who's struggling this month? No matter how organised we were for Christmas, we're still finding it difficult to make December's early pay stretch for the five and a half weeks till January's pay day. We've had some unexpected things to pay out (car battery, school trip deposit and musical instruments) which has made things even more difficult so I need to keep even closer control than usual over our food budget this month.I managed to get a big bag of minced steak mince from Tesco just before closing yesterday reduced to just £2.64 so you can guess what's going to feature very … [Read more...]
Easy Coconut and Lime Marmalade muffins….
I like to bake every Sunday to make sure that we have enough treats for our packed lunches through the week. I usually make something like packed lunch cake or some sort of muffins using my tried and tested muffin recipe but today I had some coconut milk to use up so I decided to pair it with some lime marmalade that's been in my fridge for what seems like forever and make some lime and coconut muffins! You can use any marmalade or jam (and probably even chocolate spread or peanut butter with this recipe but you might need to substitute the coconut milk with normal milk depending on what … [Read more...]
Our week in pictures (and a few words) – Week 2….
I'm really enjoying taking part in Project 365 and even though this week has been a funny old week, looking back at the pictures has made me smile....The spider incident - poor Mr Frugal had to come and rescue me as I hate spiders. So tired after his first few days at school he was sound asleep by half six! This is Master Frugal's first attempt at Instagram although I did think he was quietly playing Angry Birds on my phone. We were at the out of hours dentist with Miss Frugal as she has an abscess in her mouth where a big tooth is pushing through. Snowball the Furby now has her … [Read more...]
What to do with your leftover Christmas chocolate….
If you're house is anything like ours, leftover chocolate is about as rare as left over wine for most of the year. But around this time every year (and again at Easter) we seem to have masses of it!Our favourite way to use up any leftover chocolate is to melt it all together in a bowl, add some plates of chopped fruit, some marshmallows and maybe some cookies and give everyone a kebab skewer (or a fork) and away you go.This is easily the easiest to make and funnest to eat (not a word I know) pudding that I know....I don't like to brag but I *may* possibly have secured the Mother … [Read more...]
The first meal plan of the year….
Meal planning is hard enough over Christmas but add to that illness and a complete lack of energy to even write a meal plan, let along stick to it and you end up with a complete meal planning failure! So, now that we're on the mend (mostly) and the kids are back at school, it's time to get back on track and try and spend even less than usual to make up for the last few weeks. As well as trying to be super-frugal and only use things that are in, I'm going to try and cook a new meal at least once a fortnight (once a week seems like too much hard work at the minute) so I *may* attempt pulled … [Read more...]
