I really think it’s important to have one to one time with my children – as much for my benefit as for theirs and as I mentioned before Christmas, Miss Frugal and I have starting a regular date night once a week. We’ve agreed that every Friday night we’ll go somewhere or do something together, just the two of us.
So far, we’ve been for hot chocolates at Costa, make-up shopping, window shopping for clothes, wallpaper sample hoarding and we’ve had movie nights and spa nights at home. It’s not that difficult to find things to do together because I understand her completely and the things she’s interested in are familiar to me.
I wish I could say the same about her younger brother who, despite previously turning down the chance of a date with his Mum, has now decided he wants a bit of the date night action.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m more than happy to do this (although they might have to have a date alternate weeks rather than the one a week I was having with Miss Frugal) but if I’m honest, I have very few ideas when it comes to a date night with Master Frugal – mainly because the things he likes, I don’t really get.
I have no clue about football and can barely hold my own in a conversation with him when he’s telling me all about his favourite players or the amazing goal someone has scored. He’s tried to teach me about Minecraft in the past but he gets impatient with me because he’s such an expert and I’m such a ‘noob’ (is that the right word? I’m sure that’s what he called me as he downed his xBox controller in disgust). I don’t get wrestling and I don’t understand the attraction of some of the YouTube vloggers who he loves.
He’s like a completely different species to his older sister!
There’s plenty of things we do together at home – we love to snuggle on the sofa and watch a film, we cook together and we often read together on a night but he wants to actually go out somewhere for his date nights every now and again like my date nights with his sister which is fair enough but where can we go? I don’t mind the odd trip to Costa but I’m at a loss after that as he hates shopping and I’m not a sporty person….
