I can't tell you the number of times that I'm just about to cook something when I realise that I'm missing a vital ingredient! It's so frustrating because I either need to make an unscheduled trip to the shops (never a good idea) or change my meal plans for that day.But then I came across a post on Pinterest suggesting using apple sauce instead of butter in a cake when you've ran out of butter. I tried it and the resulting cake was absolutely delicious so I had a look into what other substitutions were possible. There's loads more than you would think, or at least there's loads more … [Read more...]
Is a packed lunch cheaper? Here’s a breakdown of what it costs me every day to help you….
Every year at this time, I get lots of emails from you lovely readers asking my advice about whether I think packed lunches are cheaper and better value than school dinners. As you can imagine, this usually prompts me to write a post about packed lunches but last week, when I started to write my annual 'packed lunches are awesome' post I realised that the post I published last year covered everything I wanted to say. So rather than bore you all write it again, I thought I would simply re-share last year's post today and work on a different kind of awesome packed lunches post (keep an eye … [Read more...]
How to get good quality meat for great prices….
Let me just say straight away that this isn't a review. Or rather it is a review but one that I'm writing because I placed an order myself with Muscle Foods and I was so impressed with the quality of food for the price I paid that I wanted to share it with you guys too. Some of the links I've included are affiliate links though which means that if you do buy something, you'll pay exactly the same but I might also get something too. Thanks. ;-)I don't know about you but I always feel better buying something from a company when I've been recommended them by people that I know so when the … [Read more...]
Five Fabulously Frugal Things I’ve done this week {5th August 2016}….
1) This week I made a batch of our homemade Febreze to give the curtains and carpets a nice little refresh. It really is lovely and refreshing and is a great alternative to the shop bought versions which cost a lot more than my budget version!Make your own here.2) This week I cancelled Miss Frugal's mobile phone contract and switched to a great PAYG deal with EE. For £15 every 30 days she'll get 4GB data, unlimited texts and 250 minutes. Her current contract is £23.99 a month so that's a saving of £8 a month for double the data and believe me, that girl can get through … [Read more...]
My secret to finding free books for your Kindle….
{UPDATED FOR 2016 as I wanted to add in some more places you can find free kindle books}According to the date I first published this post, I've had my Kindle for coming up to four years now and it's still going strong despite being used on a daily basis. When it comes to managing priorities, whether it’s choosing to stick with a reliable Kindle or finding someone who can write an essay for me, sometimes sticking to what works best for you is the smartest choice. Mr Frugal has tried to get me to replace it so many times to one of the newer models but I love the basic one that I have so … [Read more...]
3 ways to make your own festival ready DIY flower headband….
Miss Frugal is desperate to go to a festival but I'm not so keen as I like my home comforts too much to enjoy camping all that much. Last year, I managed to hold her off by having a festival in our own back garden but this year she's not been so easy to put off.The first DIY flower headband is made using a bunch of artificial flowers that I bought from The Range for £1.29 and although I do love it, in hindsight I think smaller flowers would have worked better. All I did with this one is intertwine the roses with each other around our marshmallow jar as that was the closest thing to head … [Read more...]
