Stealth money saving is what I call the little things that I do to save money that my family don't know about. For example, Mr Frugal would never, ever eat Quorn. For no particular reason - just because he doesn't like the thought of it.But.... he actually eats Quorn mince at least once a week as I add some to anything that I use minced beef in to pad it out a little bit because Quorn mince is cheaper than minced beef and you really can't tell that you're eating it when you add it to something like I do.So I've been thinking about what other secret money saving I do and … [Read more...]
It’s Back – Free Family and Friends Railcard 2013….
A Family and Friends Railcard will save you a third off the price of normal adult train fares and 60% off children's fares so even taking into account that the price of one is going to increase to £30a year from the 19th May it still more than pays for itself over the course of a year. In fact, ours paid for itself on the first journey we booked with it to Manchester last Summer and it's carried on saving us money since then. I don't know about you but I'd much rather get the train than drive somewhere - it's a much more comfortable journey, there's no car parking to worry … [Read more...]
Why it’s time to DITCH your drier….
Before we moved to the house we live in now, we used to have a tumble drier and if I'm honest, we probably used it at least four times a week. It was always just so easy to do a quick mid-week wash and pop the clothes in the tumble drier to dry them ready for the next day and with two small children, my tumble drier was probably my most used appliance.Apart from the obvious costs of using the tumble drier itself, there was also the cost of the extra (usually half full or less) washes that I did through the week because I knew that I could dry the clothes quickly in the tumble … [Read more...]
What if you just can’t afford to pay the bills – would you take out a payday loan….
There may be times when you just don't have enough money to last you until your next payday. It's bad enough if it's just a one off for whatever reason but if it's every month and you're struggling to pay your bills then you really need to get some help as soon as possible. Don't think that by ignoring the problem that it will go away or magically get better. The fact is that the longer you leave it, the harder it is to sort out and once you face the facts that you do need help everything else is a piece of cake.I wrote about the things you can do here last year but what's prompted my … [Read more...]
Share one thing you’ve done today to save money….
To me, being frugal is all about the little things. The little things, like giving up your weekly coffee from Starbucks or your occasional cheeky takeaway might not seem like much when you look at it as a one off. But if you look at it over a longer period then the savings start to mount up! A weekly treat like a coffee from Starbucks when you do your weekly shop adds up to over £150 over the course of a year. Even going without your daily newspaper adds up to savings of almost £175.00 and you don't even have to miss out as you can get all the news you need online! So, what I want you … [Read more...]
My 5 favourite frugal date night ideas….
I don't know about anyone else but the older my children get, the harder it is to find the time (or the energy) to have some quality alone time with Mr Frugal. We used to try and have two nights a week where it was early bed for the kids and we would do something together but now, they want to stay up later and join in with everything we do!I don't mind this really, I actually love our family game nights and movie nights that we can have now they're a bit older but it does mean that we have to be a bit more flexible with out date nights....Do Lunch together Every now and again, we … [Read more...]
