Slow cookers are awesome, they really are! This last couple of weeks have been a bit of a nightmare for me as I've been working longer hours than normal as well as not feeling 100% thanks to a seemingly never ending cold but thanks to my slow cooker, I've been able to serve up meals that are so delicious that you'd think I'd been slaving away in the kitchen all day*.(* This may be a slight exaggeration but they've definitely been tasty ;-))We've had the usual food you would think of when you think of a typical meal you would cook in the slow cooker - curry, chilli, casserole and … [Read more...]
The stuff that dreams are made of….
Remember before Christmas when I told you that I was trying to focus more on experiences rather than gifts?Well one of Master Frugal's experiences took place this week and it was amazing - far better than I had expected and worth every penny we paid for it.He's a huge Boro fan and follows them avidly so when he didn't really ask for much at Christmas we had no idea what to buy him as his main present. It felt like we'd be buying him something for the sake of it as he hadn't really asked for anything and didn't really need anything. So we started thinking about what sort of experience … [Read more...]
Small things that make me smile {February 2016}….
You're probably sick of me telling you by now that my word for 2016 is Happy and that I'm hoping to do more of the things that make me happy and less of the things don't.I'm trying not just to think of the big things or the things that I do or don't do though because it's to me, it's also about appreciating the smaller things in life that aren't really a big deal to anyone other than me. It's these small things add up to make my life a happy one! Here's some of the small things that have made me happy this month....Last night was time for Master Frugal's long awaited Christmas … [Read more...]
What lessons are we teaching our children about money….
What did your parents teach you about money? Two things I remember being told are that money doesn't grow on trees and also being told that you don't get paid for what you do, it's what you know how to do - neither of them seem like huge life lessons, do they? But they really are.... Money doesn't grow on trees Money doesn't grow on trees comes from the fact that it's easy to think that money is endless - especially to a child who sees you walk up to a cash machine and walk away with cash or watches you hand over your card to pay for things as it just looks so easy to them. It's … [Read more...]
How to help your child be a better friend….
It wasn't until it was time to apply for a secondary school for Miss Frugal that I thought seriously about the huge part that friends could play in her happiness.Regular readers might remember that we were faced with the hardest decision we'd had to make since becoming parents when choosing what secondary school to send her to. We had to choose between sending her to the school all of her friends were going to which we knew to have poor education standards and even worse disciplinary standards, or to the local faith school where she wouldn't know a single person but would get a great … [Read more...]
My Family Photo Project {February 2016}….
Last week we had a lovely few hours at Mount Grace Priory which is somewhere we've been a few times over the last year or so. We all love it for different reasons - Miss Frugal loves that she can climb, Master Frugal loves the fact he can play football with his dad and I love it because it's often so quiet that there's just us there. As it's one of our favourite places, it seems fitting that the family photo that we took there was my favourite family photo of the month....My aim is for 2016 is to take one #FamilySelfie a week and then once a month, I'll share my … [Read more...]
