Over the last few months we've been making the most of our English Heritage membership by visiting some amazing places in our area and further afield. We've learned a lot about the history of our country but even better than that, we've had a lot of fun together!Today I thought we'd try something a bit different by visiting English Heritage's most modern property - York's Cold War Bunker. In case you're wondering what you'll find if you visit York Cold War Bunker yourself, here's what the website has to say about it.... The York Cold War Bunker uncovers the secret history of … [Read more...]
Days Out: The Blackpool Tower Dungeons….
The year before last we had a lovely weekend away in Blackpool with the kids and one of the things we planned to do was visit The Blackpool Tower Dungeon. We headed there after a trip to the top of the tower, bought our tickets and were shown where to wait for the experience to begin. That's where our problems started! ;-) Miss Frugal was already emotional from her trip to the top of the tower (it was higher than she expected, therefore scarier than she thought) and it and she suddenly decided that actually, she didn't want to go in. The staff were so lovely to her and tried their best … [Read more...]
Days Out: Richmond Castle….
We've had a lovely day at Richmond Castle today and even though the sun didn't make an appearance we still had a brilliant afternoon. At this point I should probably tell you about the history of this 900 (I think) year old castle but to be honest I didn't read a single sign as I was too busy exploring the many little tunnels and staircases around the castle ruins and snapping the usual pictures of the kids climbing everywhere they possibly could. There were no special events going on and there were hardly any other people there as you can see from the photo above which we took from a … [Read more...]
Days Out: The Festival of Thrift, Darlington….
Last weekend, Miss Frugal and I headed to the Festival of Thrift in Darlington for a bit of girly time while the men of the house watched the football. If you've haven't had the pleasure of visiting the Festival of Thrift before then I strongly recommend trying to get there next year because we had an amazing day! The first Festival took place in 2013 and welcomed 27,000 visitors, and last year which was our first year visiting saw a massive 40,000 visitors visiting. I've no idea how many went this year but it felt bigger than last year so I'm guessing even more than last year! Here's … [Read more...]
Days Out: Why it’s good to love where you live….
You might have noticed that over the last month or so I've started to share a post every Sunday about a day out that we've enjoyed as a family together recently.I was inspired a little bit by some lovely days out that we've had as a family since we got our annual family membership to the English Heritage but also I thought it would motivate me a little bit more to make sure that we continue to get our and about now that the Summer's over.Yesterday we went back to a local forest that we discovered last weekend - it's less than 15 minutes drive from where we live but we've never visited … [Read more...]
Days out: RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre….
Last Summer we spent a lovely afternoon looking around the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre in Lincolnshire but I just realised that I never got around to sharing it with you all so I'm putting that right today! The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre houses a Lancaster Bomber (one of the only two left in the world in working order), a Douglas Dakota, six spitfires, two hurricanes and two chipmunks (not the furry variety). Most of this goes over my head but the men of the family were extremely excited at the prospect of being in close proximity to these … [Read more...]
