Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens in Morpeth is described on the English Heritage website as somewhere that you can lose yourself and when we were struggling to decide where to go for the day last weekend using our English Heritage membership, it was this description that swung it for us: ....with its unique combination of Grecian architecture, medieval ruins, formal terraces and lush jungle-esque Quarry Garden. Soak up the sights and smells of our Grade 1 listed gardens, roam the fabulous pillars in the grand hall, and enjoy wonderful views from the top of the castle tower. Belsay Hall was … [Read more...]
Days out: Mount Grace Priory….
We had a lovely afternoon out last week at Mount Grace Priory in Northallerton and while we were there we decided to buy an annual family membership to English Heritage which meant that we didn't pay anything on the day but will pay around £7 a month for the next twelve months. We've been considering this for a while but were in two minds whether to buy an English Heritage or National Trust membership - we went for the English Heritage after seeing just how many places there were to visit within an hours drive.Family entry in to Mount Grace Priory without the pass would have cost £16.90 … [Read more...]
The things you discover when you take a wrong turn….
Yesterday we went shopping to York which is a good hours drive away from where we live and on the way back, we turned left instead of right at a t-junction which caused Mr Frugal to mutter a few choice words under his breath and the kids to squeal in delight when they saw a sign for a pick your own strawberry farm.Their squeals meant that we didn't turn back as Mr Frugal wanted to but that we carried on down what seemed to be the longest road ever to find the farm. We eventually found it about five miles down the road but they'd closed down the pick your own fruit side of the farm last … [Read more...]
Family Fun at Conkers….
Remember our annual family trip to the Trafford Centre that I told you about the other day? Well here’s part two….We usually go shopping on the Saturday of our Trafford Centre weekend and sometimes pop into Manchester if there’s anything going on but this year we were invited to visit Conkers on the Saturday as part of a bloggers event. I’d already booked and paid for our hotel so I couldn’t change the date of the Trafford centre weekend so we were in two minds about whether to make the trek from Manchester to Conkers.I’m really pleased we did decide to go though because we had … [Read more...]
Time Traveller – Disneyland Paris 2009….
This week I'm joining in with Marianne and her fantastic Time Traveller linky and I'm going to share one of our pre-blog holidays with you. We used to travel quite a lot when the kids were younger and even more so before we had them as I was a travel agent when I was younger and we took full advantage of the holiday freebies I was offered.I've got boxes of holiday photos in the garage and Miss Frugal and I often like to sit and look through them and there's so many that I could have chosen to share today but I chose this one because it's my happiest holiday memory. Disneyland Paris … [Read more...]
Our Day at the Dogs Trust….
Last week we were lucky enough to be invited along for a bit of a VIP tour of our local Dogs Trust centre in Darlington. Miss Frugal was ridiculously excited about the day as she loves the Dogs Trust and regularly sends me emails of dogs that she's found on their site that she thinks will make a good friend for Buddy, our little Bichon Frise. The Dogs Trust centre was very different to what I was expecting and I wanted to share a little of our experience with you today but to more than that, I want to inspire you to pop along to your own local Dogs Trust centre or even better, to sponsor a … [Read more...]
