In the past I’ve always said that Sky TV was something that we would happily pay for – it was our little luxury and we were OK with it seeing as we don’t drink, smoke or go out very much!
I can’t remember exactly how much we used to pay for our Sky package but I think it used to be around £70 a month for the full package including the movies and the sports. We recently changed to Virgin Media and saved a fortune by taking our phone and broadband with them and getting a cheaper package without the sports or the movies.
The sports channels are no big loss to anyone apart from Mr Frugal although I’d gladly have them back again if he wanted them (he works hard enough to have a treat), he’s adamant that they’re not worth what we were paying for them so even though he has a whinge every now and again, he’s OK with not having them for the money it saves us.
The movies aren’t really a loss either as we’ve got Netflix which has a huge choice of films to choose from when we fancy a family movie night which isn’t as often as we used to thanks to the fact that the kids are growing up and can never seem to agree on a film anymore!
So we don’t watch movies or sports on TV and we also don’t watch any soaps or reality shows which has got me thinking about what we do actually watch on TV.
I’ve come to the conclusion that, apart from the odd show, the vast majority of our TV watching (which isn’t much at all) is on Netflix right now. Miss Frugal and I are watching Pretty Little Liars and I’m watching Persons of Interest and Once upon a Time with Mr Frugal but other than that, I can’t think of the last time that I watched something on actual TV!
But even though I know that I could very easily do without TV and all of the million and one channels that come with it, I think that as a family, the decision to get rid of our TV would be a frugal step too far!
What about you? Would your family be happy to get rid of the TV!
