This DIY Essential Oils Bug Spray is just what you need to keep the bugs away this Summer without the harsh chemicals of the shop bought bug repellents!
Both of my two have always hated bugs which was always a bit of a nightmare when we were out and about when they were younger. I hated the shop bought bug repellent spray as it always smelled like it was filled with chemicals and bad stuff so we persevered and luckily they grew out of most of their bug fears as they got older.
Last Summer though, we went to Cyprus for our Summer holidays and I wanted to take a bug repellent spray as the bugs there are bigger and meaner looking. 😉 I experimented a bit over the month before we went away and made some of my own DIY Essential Oils bug spray using a combination of essential oils that I read are good at repelling bugs.
How to make your own DIY Essential Oils Bug Spray
These are the quantities I started with as the spray bottle I used for this initially was 175ml but I made it a few times last Summer so I ended up scaling this up to a bigger bottle.
60ml (1/4 cup) witch hazel
60ml (1/4 cup) distilled water
10-15 drops lemongrass essential oil
10-15 drops citronella essential oil
10-15 drops lavender essential oil
10-15 drops patchouli essential oil
2-3 drops Argan oil
1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
- Add the witch hazel and distilled water to a jug
- Add the essential oils to your jug and gently mix.
- Add the Vitamin E oil and the Argan oil and mix until it’s all combined.
- Pour mixture into spray bottle.
- Step 11: Spray before heading out into nature and reapply throughout the day as necessary.
This oil is safe for all skin types but for kids under 10, I’d decrease drops of essential oils from 10-15 to 5.
And once you’ve made your DIY Bug Spray, print out these super cute little labels to make sure everyone knows exactly what’s in the bottle. 😉
Oh, and would you believe that despite the fact that I originally started making this DIY Essential Oils Bug Spray to take away to Cyprus, I actually forgot it!!! We used it here in the UK plenty though and kept on using it into September when all the mosquitos seem to gather in our garden for a month long party!
As always, please read this post before using essential oils.
