In last week’s five frugal things post, I shared one of our favourite family meals and how it cost around £5 to cook enough minced beef and onions for four large portions which is more than enough to feed a family.
Macaroni cheese has always been a family favourite meal for us and at one point, I pretty much cooked it weekly as every time I wrote a meal plan, the kids asked me to make sure that this was on there. I cooked it because everyone enjoyed it but I loved that it was a quick and easy, budget meal that made me look like a great cook as every plate was empty at the end of the meal.
It’s actually been a long while since I cooked this as I’m diabetic now and pasta sends my blood sugar levels sky high but it was the first meal that came to mind
The recipe itself is here but I’ll share the ingredients and their costs below so you can see how much the meal costs…
- 300g Macaroni – 72p per 500g so about 43p for this meal
- 800ml Milk – about 50p
- 50g Butter – we use margarine which works out to about 20p
- 50g Plain flour – 13p
- 200g Grated Cheese – £1.50
That comes to £3.05 for a lovely huge bowl of macaroni cheese which is just perfect on it’s own and I pretty much guarantee that you will have full tummies and a happy family after serving them this for tea!
So you can feed your family a super filling meal for just £3 and if you want to splash the cash then you can add in some brocolli for around 50p (a third of a bag of frozen brocolli) and some bacon for £1.49 (again, Asda) which can be cooked crispy before crumbling and stirring through at the last minute. Or it tastes amazing with a couple of garlic baguettes which you can pick up for £1.
There’s so many options to take your mac and cheese to the next level but even the basic recipe will hit the spot!
