How do you choose what fruit and vegetables you cook with?
Is it based on what you fancy with your tea or do you ever think about what’s in season before you decide? I’m usually more of a cook whatever I fancy kind of cook but this year I’ve decided that I’m going to try and think a bit more about what foods are in season when I plan my meals.
There’s a couple of reasons for this, the first being that fruit and veg that are in season are usually better value for money because they’re readily available and not having to be shipped in from somewhere or grown in a hothouse somewhere. Which brings me to my second reason, the fact that the food is not being shipped from far and wide means that I’m doing my bit for the environment and supporting British grown produce where possible.
Another advantage is that it’s going to make me focus on what I can cook with the foods that are in season so I may finally get around to keeping my annual New Years Resolution to learn to cook a wider variety of food.
In case you fancy joining me, here’s what’s in season right now (December to March):
Beetroot
Brussels Sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Celeriac
Chicory
Fennel
Jerusalem -Artichoke
Kale
Leeks
Parsnips
Potatoes
Red Cabbage
Swede
Turnips
Apples
Pears
Don’t get me wrong, I’m think I’m always going to be a lover of frozen mixed veg because it’s so versatile and convenient but I’m going to try and expand my very limited cooking repertoire this year starting with this!
What about you, do you want to join me in trying to eat more of what’s in season?
