This may come as a surprise to you (although more than likely not) but I’m not always a shining example of frugal-ness. 😉
I spend so much time on here sharing ways to save money and ideas on how to be frugal and rarely share much of the non-frugal side of my life so I thought I’d start a monthly post to share some of the slightly non-frugal things I’ve done! I hope it shows you that no-one’s perfect
This is the second post in my frugal fails series- the first is here and the second one is here if you want to see the last few month’s frugal fails.
Frugal Fail #1 – Last month’s Shopping Spends
I know it was the Summer holidays but oh my goodness, I overspent massively on last month’s shopping budget. I stuck to meal planning for the most part so that wasn’t the drama, it was more the snacks and extras that I bought that pushed me over the edge. 😉 This month, we are absolutely trying to get better but I’m finding it quite hard if I’m honest.
Frugal Fail #2 – Hotel Car Parking
We had a lovely few days away in Liverpool made even better by the fact that we found a lovely little hotel to stay in which was right in the city centre and really reasonably priced. There was no car parking at the hotel though so they recommend a multi-story car park five minutes walk away which costs a small fortune unless you get them to validate your ticket which reduced the price by about a third.
Guess who forgot to get their ticket validated? I was tempted to walk back to the hotel but I had a blister from all the walking we’d done and just wanted to get in the car and sit down. Mr not-so-Frugal had no intention of walking back instead of me and decided he’d rather just pay the extra which meant that parking cost us about £20!!!
Frugal Fail #3 – Forgot about washing in the machine
I set the timer on my washing machine before I went to work so I perfectly timed my washing to be ready to get out when I got home and I planned to get it straight out on the line as the sunshine was forecast. Unfortunately, I ended up working overtime last Friday and somehow forgot about it until Sunday afternoon (I know, but it was a busy weekend in my defence) which meant that it smelled awful when I did get it out. My poor little Eco-Egg couldn’t get rid of the smell (even using some essential oils in the wash) after I re-washed it so I had to buy some more washing detergent to get rid of the smell and wash it a THIRD time.
Frugal Fail #4 – Wasn’t very clever switching food around in meal plan
Sometimes, even when I’m sticking to our meal plan, I switch the meals around a little bit for random reasons – usually, it’s because I’m late home from work and need a quicker meal to cook or we just don’t fancy what we have planned. So I switched our meals about and somehow ended up with two main ingredients that needed using up in the same day! I had chicken that needed using up and also beef strips that I was planning to make beef teriyaki with and I only realised at tea time on the day.
I know I could have frozen either one of them but then I’d have to get them out and defrost them which is a faff so I ended up turning the chicken into Instant Pot Shredded Chicken which I then used the next day in Quesadillas but I was so annoyed that I’d messed up as it could have been a waste with other ingredients.
Frugal Fail #5 – Forgot to cancel something I’d signed up to get a free trial
I’m really annoyed about this! I signed up for a free trial for something to get some Swagbucks and I forgot to cancel it – even though I’d put it in my calendar so I wouldn’t forget! I’ve cancelled it now but I still got charged £5.49 because I forgot!
There’s nothing unforgivable there again this month (or at least I don’t think there is) so I hope we can still be friends. 😉
