This may come as a surprise to you (although more than likely not) but I’m not always a shining example of frugal-ness. 😉
I spend so much time on here sharing ways to save money and ideas on how to be frugal and rarely share much of the non-frugal side of my life so I thought I’d start a monthly post to share some of the slightly non-frugal things I’ve done!
Frugal Fail #1 – Ready made pancake batter mix
I did not even know this existed until I rocked up at Costco last weekend but this is 4.6kg of dried buttermilk pancake mix, which, in my defence was about £6 and will make about a million pancakes (240 to be precise as 130g makes 6-8).
In my defence, it’s a timesaver and makes pancakes ridiculously easy so even though I have an amazing recipe for fluffy pancakes that I know tastes amazing, this is so much quicker as well as probably working out cheaper per pancake.
Frugal Fail #2 – I booked another holiday
You all know how much I love to travel, right? And how New York is my absolute favourite city to travel to?
Well, this month I booked a trip to New York for the week before Christmas! I have other things I could be saving for but hey ho, off to New York we go. It’s just me, Miss Frugal and her best friend going this time and I’m ridiculously excited already at the thought of all of the Christmas fun we’re going to have.
Frugal Fail #3 – Didn’t bring the washing in
I’ve been so pleased with myself lately for all the drying I’ve been doing outside now I have my new rotary drier (similar to this one for those of you who asked – I love the fact I can take it down) but last weekend, it rained while my washing was out. Now what I should have done is run outside, bring it in and stick it over the clothes airer that I have for inside but what I actually did was decide that it was already wet so I might as well just leave it out and see if the rain passed over quickly. It didn’t.
It actually turned into a bit of a torrential downpour and by the time it stopped, the clothes had to be washed again.
Frugal Fail #4 – Forgot my packed lunch
I made myself some lovely chicken pasta for lunch on Monday night along with a little tub of overnight oats that I was planning to have for breakfast when I got to work. I got up Tuesday morning and got them out of the fridge ready to put in a bag to take to work and then somehow forgot all about them.
There’s very little in the way of food places near where I work so I ended up having to buy a granola pot for £1.25 and then lunch for £4.25 which was so frustrating – especially when I’d gone to so much trouble with being prepared.
And as if that wasn’t bad enough, when I got home, the sun was shining through the window right on my tubs that were on the kitchen counter so I didn’t dare risk eating the chicken thanks to the only bit of hot sun I’ve seen in weeks focusing right in on it.
Frugal Fail #5 – Wasted Food
I hate hate hate food waste so this one really annoyed me and out of all the fails above – this is the one that made me annoyed with myself. I worked late unexpectedly on Tuesday last week and actually ended up getting in after 8 pm instead of around 5 pm as I normally do.
Mr Frugal had already sorted tea for the kids but had gone with the easier option of Wednesday night’s planned tea which was just egg, chips and beans instead of cooking the chicken shawarma that I had marinating in the fridge. I’m not mad about that at all – I even suggested that he took the easy route.
I’m mad because the chicken needed to be used on that day and by the time I got in from work, I was so tired that I completely forgot about it and had a bath and an early night. The next day when I remembered, the chicken was out of date and I’m quite funny about using out of date chicken – I couldn’t even smell it or look at it to make sure it was OK as it was marinating in chicken shawarma spice and natural yoghurt so all I could see and smell was that.
I don’t think there’s anything unforgivable there!
