Every week (ish) I share five frugal things that I’ve done during the previous week just to show you that the small things you do all add up to a great frugal lifestyle where you can learn to live a fabulously frugal life.
Hey! 👐
It’s replacing a set of drawers that have been in there for a long time which we’ve been planning on replacing with a nice sideboard. This bargain just meant that we did that sooner than expected and whilst we decided in the shop that it was worth it at £20 even as a short term measure to get rid of those drawers and that at some point, we’d probably move it up to the loft as storage. But when we’ve got it in, it looks like a good fit so I actually think it’s going to stay right where it is.
2) Second bargain of the day is a bit of a project that’s now sat in our dining room until it’s done and ready to move to it’s permanent home upstairs. This was a display model set of drawers reduced from £99 to £30 as it has a chip on the top. It’s actually going into one of the kids bedrooms so we thought that we would fill in the chip with some filler and do something (not sure what yet) to make the top more colourful, disguising the damage with colour.
We were going to buy these drawers at full price next month when we have the walls in the bedroom painted and finished so this was a great find.
3) I bought a gammon joint this week from our local butchers for £3.99 reduced from just under £8 and popped it in the Instant Pot yesterday ready for tea last night. We had gammon and chips for tea last night, gammon salad sandwiches for lunch, and for tea tonight we had gammon and leek risotto with some of the joint shredded and some reduced leeks that I bought from Asda last night (already prepped and everything).
I think we have about a third of it left too so I’ll be thinking of something creative to do with that for dinner tomorrow too!
Not bad for £3.99.
4) This is our dining room wall!
I’ve been eyeing up this plain white wall with a vision of a lovely piece of artwork hanging there but this week, we put up a dartboard that was gathering dust (and rust) in the shed in the back garden. This is a much better option that something that just looks pretty if you ask me!
A used to play darts and I’ve really enjoyed watching it with him when it’s on TV so when I was poorly and couldn’t go out, he set up a dartboard on a stand for me in the front room to keep me occupied. We had a good laugh playing it but the stand was big and bulky and no-one needs to be tripping over that twenty times a day, do they?
We’ve moved that into the Summer house now ready to bring out to the garden when we have those warm Summer nights that must be coming our way at some point and instead, we brought this one inside, gave it a good clean and popped it on the wall.
Now we can play on a night together which is saving us money as the other option is to go to the pub to play haha.
5) This week, we needed to fill the car up with diesel which costs an absolute fortune. Our main car is an Audi Q7 which is a seven seater tank with a giant fuel tank that costs £130 to fill – not sure how many litres that is but every penny we can save on petrol makes a difference when we’re spending that much on diesel twice a month.
We used the petrol prices app to check prices before we set off to fill up and were a bit surprised that the Asda less than a mile from us was charging 155.9p per litre but the Asda in the next town (literally 3 miles away) was charging 151.7p a litre which I *think* saved us around a fiver.
That’s a mad difference considering it was probably the same tanker that delivered the fuel to both petrol stations with them both being Asda and so close together.
And I do get that a fiver isn’t a huge amount but every bit is better in our pockets than anyone else’s, right?
So, there’s this week’s five frugal things!
