Every week (ish) I share five frugal things that I’ve done during the previous week just to show you that the small things you do all add up to a great frugal lifestyle where you can learn to live a fabulously frugal life.
Hey! 👐
1) Our fixed price energy tariff has come to an end this month so we’ve had a good look around the managed to get a really good deal with a fixed rate that will last for 12 months.
The new tariff is just over 15 pound a month cheaper than our current one which is a bonus. there was actually a cheaper one which we considered but that can go up or down depending on the wholesale energy prices. We did a little bit of research and it looks likely that prices will go up in the last quarter of this year which puts us off any deal that isn’t fixed.
2) While I was getting myself organised with the energy tariff, I decided to give EE a call to see if they could save me some money as my phone was just about out of contract and it turns out that they absolutely could.
I decided to keep my phone and just go SIM only where I got 125GB of data and unlimited phone calls and texts which saved me around 40 pound a month. I did the same for both of the older kids phones so we’re now paying the same for all three as we were paying for one so that’s a huge result.
3) And seeing as I was on a roll, I decided to cancel my Amazon Kindle unlimited subscription. I can’t believe I’ve actually cancelled this because I used to love reading my Kindle. Every night before I went to bed, I’d read my Kindle until I went to sleep and get really lost in the stories I was reading.
These days for some reason it just doesn’t hold as much appeal, and I don’t need to get lost in someone else’s story because I am so happy with my own, maybe?
Anyway, whatever the reason, I don’t read my Kindle as much anymore and it’s been relegated to the bedside cabinet drawer for a long time so I’ve cancelled my monthly subscription which saved another £9.
4) I haven’t been in the best of health this year for various reasons out of my control but it has made me realise that I need to do better with the things that I can control- one of these things is my weight which is creeping upwards.
I have rejoined Slimming World which I know isn’t everyone’s favourite way to lose weight but it works for me and that’s the important thing here. I feel like this will give me the best start and I feel better just a week in knowing that I’ve taken control of at least one part of my health.
I do need to avoid eating too much fruit or too many carbohydrates and sugars though so I’m currently exploring new ways to enjoy food without spending a fortune.
My favourite snack food at the moment is air fryer chickpeas which are super cheap, pretty health and ridiculously easy to make. They’re basically just made by drying off some canned chickpeas, spraying with some oil, sprinkling with some spices and then throwing in the airfryer until they’re crispy.
Yum!
Much cheaper than ready made ‘healthy snacks’.
5) Last but not least this week, I tried out Aldi instead of Lidl for shopping as it was the closest when we were on holiday and I was impressed with it so thought I’d try it out when we got back home.
We managed to do a good shop for the whole of our trip which included plenty of treats for under £50 and I discovered that Aldi is on Airtime Rewards so I got cashback automatically of £1.86.
That took me over £5 in my cashback so I transferred to my phone bill as a credit.
I genuinely couldn’t recommend using airtight rewards for something simple and easy to get a cheeky little discount off your phone bill.
So, there’s this week’s five frugal things!
