Every week (ish) I share five frugal things that I’ve done during the previous week just to show you that the small things you do all add up to a great frugal lifestyle where you can learn to live a fabulously frugal life.
Hey! 👐
1) This week we made good use of our pine cones by making them into Bird feeders… I bought some cheap lard and literally just spooned it onto the pine cones before giving them a roll in the wild bird seed that we bought a while ago.
They’re currently making us a very popular garden in the neigbhourhood.
2) I bought some amazing board games from our local charity shop for £1!
I’m a huge fan of playing board games but sometimes we get sick of playing the same ones so I thought I’d do a bit of a refresh of our board game selection and was pleased to get five different games for a fiver last weekend.
This rhyming word dominoes game was really good for the younger kids and for the older ones, you can’t beat good old fashioned Monopoly, can you? It’s about £20 new in Tesco so finding a barely used one for £1 was very satisfying!
3) One of my least favourite areas in this house was the passageway which had an ugly kind of gold radiator cover that had seen better days and a mirror painted in the same colour.
I suggested last week that I paint the radiator cover and my very lovely partner said we could just get rid of it if I didn’t like it so I jumped on that and it was gone within the hour. 😁
The next day we went to IKEA to buy a shelf to put in it’s place (we went with black wood) and I stopped off on the way home to buy a can of spray paint to get rid of the gold as quickly as I could.
I decided against using masking tape like a sensible person would and went with some pieces of paper secured with some bricks and a random old car part. The light today is terrible and I can’t get a good photo but I’ll add one tomorrow if I can – trust me though, it looks so much better!
I used the rest of the spray paint to paint an old photo frame which will go on the wall as soon as I decide what photos to put in it but I’m sharing this photo so you can see what I mean when I say ugly gold colour haha.
4) I went to the Festival of Thrift last weekend which is something I’ve done for years.
I find it really odd that it used to be held in the grounds of a museum in the town where I used to live and now I’ve moved, it’s followed me and is now held in a park in the next town to me.
It’s a great afternoon out where you can learn all about sustainable living and buy products from local business who all use sustainable method to make their products.
I didn’t get carried away though and just bought some fresh veg from a local producer and some pretty bowls from the charity shop stall that was there.
5) This week, I’ve batch cooked omelettes, soup and some cajun chicken for wraps so I’m feeling very organised. I find it helps me to have snacks at the ready so when I’m hungry, I’m not tempted to go for something I shouldn’t eat.
I’ve also found that walking after a meal helps my blood sugars so I’m trying to walk every evening after tea – not easy when the weather’s not great but I’m giving it a good go.
So, there’s this week’s five frugal things!
