I have just made macaroni cheese from scratch for the first time and everyone (even Master Frugal) loved it! That doesn’t happen often in this house.
I am feeling like a real Domestic Goddess at the moment, although I’m sure that won’t last long as I have loads of jobs to do before the kids go to bed.
Here’s my recipe:
300g (ish) Macaroni
800ml Milk
50g Butter
50g Plain flour
300g Grated Cheese
Ham
While you are cooking the macaroni in one pan, melt the butter in another. When the butter has melted, mix in the flour and stir it for a few minutes. Gradually mix in the milk and keep stirring until it starts to thicken (be patient – it takes forever).
When the white sauce has thickened add most of the cheese to the pan (save a bit for the topping though) and stir it until it has melted.
Add the drained, cooked macaroni to the sauce and stir together. My pan wasn’t big enough for this so I just poured the pasta and the cheese sauce into my big mixing bowl, add the ham to the bowl and mix it all up together.
Pour into an ovenproof dish and top with the rest of the grated cheese.
Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until the top is crispy and yummy.
I forgot to take a picture of it before tea so this is what the leftovers looked like. I think it will freeze well so I have enough left over for the kids one night when I am at work – saves Mr Frugal having to strain himself…..
