This DIY homemade scouring powder is the perfect addition to your homemade cleaning kit – and if you don’t already have one then it’s a great thing to start off with as it’s easy to make and super effective!
I’m definitely planning to get back into making my own DIY cleaning products again this year – starting with this DIY scouring powder which was inspired by memories of my Mam when I was younger. She always used scouring powder on the oven, the taps and to clean the grout in the tiles around the bath.
I’m 99% sure she bought it rather than made it but I definitely remember she was a huge fan of it for pretty much everything – in fact, I feel like scouring powder to her cleaning routine was along the same lines as Germoline was to my Nanas solution to any aches, pains, cuts or bruises. 😂
What is scouring powder?
In case you’re wondering, it’s an abrasive powder that you can use to scrub hard surfaces to remove stubborn stains. You pop some onto your surface and give it a good scrub and then wipe away the residue to (hopefully) leave behind a shiny clean surface!
How to make your own homemade scouring powder
- 1/2 cup of soda crystals
- 1/2 cup bicarbonate of soda
- 2 tsp citric acid
- 1/2 cup of either dried herbs or dried lavender {optional}
- 10 drops of essential oil (lemon, peppermint or eucalyptus are perfect if you use dried herbs and lavender is fab for a dried lavender version) {optional}
I get my ingredients for cleaning DIYs from Wilkos usually as they’re not only one of the only places I could find to buy citric acid cheaply other than Amazon but they also do big packs of it as well as a big 500g pack of bicarb for about £1.50 so it’s much cheaper than buying the smaller packs in supermarkets.
To make your homemade scouring powder, just combine the ingredients into a bowl and give them a good mix together. When they’re fully combined just pop them into an airtight container and you’re good to go. My little glass jars are from Hobbycraft and they’re like mini sweetie jars
To use your scouring powder, sprinkle your surface with your powder and add a little bit of water to form a paste. Leave it for 10 minutes and then give your surface a good scrub before rinsing and wiping away with a cloth.
I’d recommend wearing gloves for this as the soda crystals are amazing for cleaning but can cause skin irritation and as always, I recommend reading this post before using any essential oils.
