I’m not sure why but every year as I turn the calendar from September to October, my thoughts turn to de-cluttering the house. I start to think about just how much ‘stuff’ we’ve accumulated since our Spring de-clutter and how the house is started to look as though it’s going to explode the next time the postman brings us a parcel.
These thoughts usually lead to a weekend (at least) long house de-clutter where I take over the living room floor with piles of things to sell, things to donate and things that just need to be got rid of. Mr Frugal busies himself on his PS4 with the odd trip to the tip or the recycling centre and the kids tend to hide in their rooms and hope I forget that they need to have a sort through their things too.
This year’s big sort is going to be a bit different though as I’m not really up to a big sort out and with my operation being on Tuesday next week, I’m going to have to take it a bit easy for a week or so. I still want to do it though so I’ve set myself a challenge….
I think choosing to find 25 things every day to get rid of in whatever way I can is going to be much more manageable. On the days when I’m not feeling awesome, I can do something small or even delegate to someone else and on good days then I can tackle something bigger.
I’ve written myself a little list of the main areas I want to try and attack to help me decide where to start….
- My wardrobe
- Miss Frugal’s clothes collection
- Handbags
- Stationery (I know, this will be hard)
- Shoes
- Coats (we have about three years worth of Winter coats hanging up)
- Bedding
- Kitchen cupboards
- Kitchen drawers
- Gadgets and electronics
- Kids toys and books
- Tat that we’ve accumulated.
- First aid box
- My writing bureau
- The sideboard in the living room
- Cups (again, they just seem to keep appearing)
- Bedding
- Tins and packets in the food cupboard
- Cushions
- Smellies
I’m going to try not to do too much as I don’t want to end up half way through a big job with no energy to finish it so I’ll do my 25 and then stop most of the time although I might go back to it later in the day if I want to do some more.
Here’s the start I’ve made today on my wardrobe:
Some days I’ll just do the good old fashioned carrier bag challenge where I give everyone a carrier bag and tell them they have to get rid of 20 things – they all come back with rubbish they’ve left lying around in their rooms and other random items like pen lids with no pens. Things that should be in the bin anyway but for one reason or another (laziness usually) it’s just been stuffed somewhere rather than walk to the bin.
And let’s face it, if I’m not feeling up to much one day then I could probably get at least 25 empty toilet rolls together to get rid of! I’m on toilet roll removal strike at the moment and I’m waiting to see just how many empty rolls it gets to before someone other than me actually puts them in the recycling bin!
