Over the last few weeks we’ve been gradually giving Miss Frugal’s room a bit of a makeover and we’re both really pleased with the finished result – she’s over the moon because it looks exactly like she wanted it to and I’m pleased because we did it on a really small budget.
To keep the costs down, we’ve tried to use things from around the house or make them ourselves and our favourite homemade project was the inspirational wall art picture that we made.
We used a picture that I bought for a couple of pounds ages ago and painted it using a light green tester pot of paint. You could use lots of things as the base for this – a blank canvas (super cheap in shops like the works), an old canvas that you don’t like or even just a piece of card that you can frame in an old photo frame. We painted it and let it dry for an hour or so before we started.
While the paint was drying we started work on the quote itself. Miss Frugal knew exactly what quote she wanted to use so I printed it out in Word making the font size about 100. We then cut each word out separately without worrying about how neat the words looked. We stuck all the words on to two sheets of coloured paper (leaving plenty of space between each word) and then cut out the words again so they have a nice colour border.
We then laid all the words out in order on our picture and when we were happy with the way they looked, we glued over each word with modge podge glue (we actually used Tesco decopage clue which we found in the craft aisle for £2).
We left it overnight to dry and came downstairs the next morning to this….
You can see the white paper looks quite blotchy and that’s because we used the modge podge glue to glue the white paper to the red background so some of the red has seeped through. You can avoid this by using a normal pritt stick type glue for that part of the gluing but Miss Frugal has decided that she loves the effect so we didn’t redo as I’d initially suggested.
She disappeared off upstairs with her picture and shouted me up ten minutes later to show me what she’d done with it. I think she’s made it look even better with a string of fairy lights from the pound shop!
The perfect addition to her new grown up bedroom!
What quote would you have used? I have a Pinterest board filled with quotes and words that make me happy if you need any inspiration….
