We had a last minute 13th Birthday party for Miss Frugal last weekend and in true Miss Frugal style, she decided on a beach party theme (despite the fact that rain was forecast) and invited 12 of her friends to come round promising an afternoon of beach party fun.
I’ll be writing a little bit more about the party at some point but while we were planning it, Miss Frugal jokingly suggested that we hire a photo booth as she and her friends are keen instagrammers and all love a good selfie!
Obviously that’s waaaaay outside my budget so I decided to go with a homemade version which is what I’m sharing with you today!
How to make a homemade photo booth
I started by asking on Facebook if anyone had any potential photo booth props I could have/borrow and the next day I had just about everything I needed! Don’t worry if you don’t have much luck with asking friends and family though as you can pick most bits up from the pound shop.
Because of the weather that was forecast, I decided to go with an indoor version for the party so at least if everything else that we had planned for the garden got rained off, they’d at least have something to do inside.
I have cream walls which would have been an OK background for the pictures but I decided to make a brighter background using a roll of pink wrapping paper stuck to the back of the living . Once I’d secured the background I put all of my props on our living room sideboard my little homemade photo booth was good to go!
(The hat, wigs and glasses you can see were all bought from there by one of my friends for a night out and have been sitting in her wardrobe ever since so she was glad to get rid of them)
The indoor homemade photo booth was our trial run the day before but when we woke up on the morning of her party the sun was shining so we decided to go with an outdoor version and hope that the rain stayed away.
Our background was a big pink blanket hung over the fence….
It’s up to you whether you want someone to take the photos or do what we did and just add a few selfie sticks to your pile of props! We took some amazing photos and I’m not exaggerating when I say that the girls spend at least 45 minutes at the start of the party taking selfies and having fun with the props.
I can’t share most of the photos but I promise you there’s some amazing ones, here’s a few….
The photo booth was one of my favourite bits of the party and I’ve seen countless pictures on Instagram over the last week of the the girls sharing their photos.
Definitely recommended!

Oh I love this Cass, what a brilliant idea! Sounds like lots of fun too. We absolutely must do one of these when POD has her next birthday party. Will be the Summer now as we had an 'un-birthday' party recently. Her birthday is on Christmas Day.
I did this for a school fayre and made a big picture frame – the kids loved it
That is such a great idea; I know my 10 year old and her friends would love it too!!
What a fab idea to make your own photo booth!! I love it – I want one!!

Hehe what a great idea, we love photo booth fun 🙂
Do you know I nearly bought a kit for L's 9th birthday yesterday, knew it was silly to spend money, but here you are to the rescue again! Thanks for reminding me to be frugal 🙂
I love this idea. I used one of these at a wedding and it was so much fun but also very expensive. Your idea is great! So cost effective and still the same amount of fun.
this looks like so much fun!!!
Love the poses. Selfies are the in thing and also apparently the cause of the spread of nits in older children!
