It's that time of year again! The Festival of Thrift is an annual festival held in the North East to celebrate sustainable living and for the last five years that I've been going, it's absolutely been my favourite day of the year.I love everything about it although it's really hard to describe it to people who've never been and I can never quite put into words what it is that I love about this event. The brochure says that it's 'a big weekend of sustainable arts, music, fashion, food, entertainment, shopping, demos, workshops & more' which pretty much sums it up to be … [Read more...]
Five Frugal Things we did this week {21 September 2018}….
Every week I share five frugal things that I've done during that week just to show you that the small things you do all add up to a great frugal lifestyle where you can learn to live a fabulously frugal life. Before I start though, I do want to say that being frugal to me is about getting the best value for our money - it's not about doing without for us or about not having nice things. We all have different financial situations and we're all frugal for different reasons - we're frugal so we can afford to do nice things together.1) It was Miss Frugal's 16th Birthday last Sunday and … [Read more...]
A (belated) back to school barbecue….
Every year since the kids started school we've had a bit of a celebration on the Friday evening of their first week back at school. It started because they were both always so grumpy and tired by the end of their first week back and we wanted to basically take their mind off their moodiness until bedtime and a movie night with popcorn and treats used to be the perfect solution. The movie night morphed into a games night as they got older and it got harder to agree on a film and then changed again into a nice family meal over the last couple of years. This year we were planning a family … [Read more...]
Ten ways to reduce food waste NOW….
I first published this post five years ago but when I sat down tonight to write a whole new post about how to reduce food waste, it felt a bit like deja vu and then I remembered this post and thought it would be easier just to give that a polish up and and share it again rather than write a whole new post!We all know that we shouldn't waste food, don't we?But are we all actively taking steps to make sure that we don't actually do it?In the UK alone we throw away about 15 million tonnes of food waste a year and just in case you've never really thought about it before, you're not … [Read more...]
How to stay out of debt this Christmas….
I’m not being any kind of Grinch here but Christmas has turned into less of a celebration and more into a contest. That’s not just my opinion at all. Figures from polls across the board show that Christmas has added massive pressure on all of us to create the perfect festive experience, especially to those of us with families, and the cost of making that dream come true is becoming higher and higher each year.Research shows that we are spending significantly more every year and that a huge amount of the cost goes on credit cards that aren’t cleared for months after the event — if even at … [Read more...]
Three things I promise my teenage daughter on her 16th Birthday….
I have an agreement with Miss Frugal that I won't share photos or stories about her on here without her agreement which is absolutely fine but today is her 16th Birthday which means that the rules don't apply, right?I'm not going to get all mushy because I don't want to be the recipient of a teenage eye roll today. But what I am going to do is share some of the things that I want Miss Frugal to remember on her 16th Birthday... NOTHING she ever does will make me love her any less! It's so important to me that she knows that there is nothing that she can do that will … [Read more...]
