I'm quite pleased with my frugal efforts this week. ;-)1) I had a bit of a kitchen cupboard re-arrange this week and realised that I really needed to get a bit more organised with my storage as I have things in the cupboards that I use all the time and things on my lovely kitchen shelving unit that were there just because they were pretty. I was very tempted to buy some more of the gorgeous Orla Kiely storage containers that are on the top shelf in the picture below but they're not cheap and I couldn't justify the price so I decided to re-use other things I had already for storage.I … [Read more...]
What happened when we wrote to 10 beauty companies to ask them to send us free stuff….
Like most thirteen year olds, Miss Frugal is a huge fan of Youtube. So obviously, when one of her favourite Youtubers suggested that everyone write to beauty companies to try and get free samples of make up, she was all over it and had a list as long as her arm of companies who she wanted to email.I agreed to help her but only if she narrowed the list down to ten (which took a lot of deliberating) and was OK with me sending the emails rather than the coming from her.She readily agreed so we set about emailing her 10 chosen companies with a very polite (and honest) email explaining … [Read more...]
Five alternatives to chips to serve with your tea tonight….
What do you serve as a accompaniment to your main meal on a night? When I was younger we used to have chips or potatoes with just about every meal but the meals that I serve to my children are completely different - for a number of reasons but mainly because they just aren't huge potato fans. We've found lots of other alternatives that we can serve with a meal and I thought you might like to see some today.... Sweet potato friesSweet potato fries are delicious and super easy to make and homemade sweet potato fries taste about a hundred times better than the ready made versions that … [Read more...]
Nine things you can make in your slow cooker that might surprise you….
Slow cookers are awesome, they really are! This last couple of weeks have been a bit of a nightmare for me as I've been working longer hours than normal as well as not feeling 100% thanks to a seemingly never ending cold but thanks to my slow cooker, I've been able to serve up meals that are so delicious that you'd think I'd been slaving away in the kitchen all day*.(* This may be a slight exaggeration but they've definitely been tasty ;-))We've had the usual food you would think of when you think of a typical meal you would cook in the slow cooker - curry, chilli, casserole and … [Read more...]
The stuff that dreams are made of….
Remember before Christmas when I told you that I was trying to focus more on experiences rather than gifts?Well one of Master Frugal's experiences took place this week and it was amazing - far better than I had expected and worth every penny we paid for it.He's a huge Boro fan and follows them avidly so when he didn't really ask for much at Christmas we had no idea what to buy him as his main present. It felt like we'd be buying him something for the sake of it as he hadn't really asked for anything and didn't really need anything. So we started thinking about what sort of experience … [Read more...]
Curried Swede Soup – healthy, homemade and delicious….
Soup is definitely my favourite lunch - especially since I started to experiment with flavours that I wouldn't necessarily have put together in the past!Last week I tried a curried swede soup after I found a 500g pack of ready prepared swede in Asda reduced to 37p, to be honest though, the full price was only 50p so it's well worth the money anyway if you ask me. I bought it with the intention of using it as a cottage pie topping instead of mash but the kids looked horrified at that so I googled 'swede' and 'soup' for a bit of inspiration.Curried swede soup was definitely the most … [Read more...]
