Those of you who've been around for a while might remember the agonising decision I had to make when it was time to apply for Miss Frugal's secondary school place. It was genuinely the hardest decision I had made as a parent so far because I had the choice of sending her to the not so good school that all of her friends were going to or the local catholic school (we're not religious) that offered a MUCH better standard of education. It was a no-brainer in the end so we went for the better school but I remember worrying about how the decision would affect Master Frugal as he's a bit of a … [Read more...]
Make sure that you’re fully prepared for Winter….
I know I've called this post 'getting prepared for Winter' but what I actually mean is getting ready for the colder weather! As the temperatures start to drop throughout October, more and more people will be starting to turn their heating on, and that's OK. In fact, I'll more than likely be joining you. ;-)I'm not going to tell you that to be frugal you need to sit at home in the cold and layer up so much that you look like the Michelin Man just to avoid putting your heating on because that's not what being thrifty means to me (it might be to you though and that's OK too).I am … [Read more...]
This week’s meal plan {5 October 2015}….
Check me out!Two week's running that I've posted an actual meal plan that looks all pretty and isn't scrawled on the back of an envelope or a (usually important not to be scribbled on) letter from school! As always, I'm not going to go through our meals day by day but I will tell you why we'll we be eating a few of the things that we'll be eating:The chilli has been in the freezer for a while now as I made double last time we ate it! I'll get it out on Sunday night and either serve it with rice or wraps (yummy but messy).Fish pie is something that I used to cook quite … [Read more...]
Car Boot Sale Bargains….
Yesterday we had a lovely lie in (9am is totally a lie in isn't it?) followed by a family breakfast of bacon sandwiches and brown sauce (which is the only sauce that should be eaten with a bacon bun) and then we sat down to have our usual Sunday morning 'what shall we do today' chat. This discussion usually consists of us all sharing an idea on what we want to do and the idea that gets the least argument wins it!After turning down a walk in the woods, a visit to a castle and a pyjama day (my choice as I've not been feeling great recently) we decided to go to the car boot sale. The only … [Read more...]
Days Out: The Festival of Thrift, Darlington….
Last weekend, Miss Frugal and I headed to the Festival of Thrift in Darlington for a bit of girly time while the men of the house watched the football. If you've haven't had the pleasure of visiting the Festival of Thrift before then I strongly recommend trying to get there next year because we had an amazing day! The first Festival took place in 2013 and welcomed 27,000 visitors, and last year which was our first year visiting saw a massive 40,000 visitors visiting. I've no idea how many went this year but it felt bigger than last year so I'm guessing even more than last year! Here's … [Read more...]
Colourful Quick and Easy Vegetable Risotto….
Anyone who knows me will know that I'm all for easy recipes and if it's an easy recipe that's both cheap to make and healthy to eat then that's all the better. This recipe for vegetable risotto ticks both boxes so I thought you might like it as much as I do!My version of vegetable risotto is not only budget friendly, healthy and packed with veg, it's also made using ingredients that you'll probably already have in your kitchen! Colourful Quick and Easy Vegetable Risotto (makes 2-3 good sized portions) 1 tablespoon oil 150g Arborio rice 375g mixed veg (frozen is fine and actually ideal … [Read more...]
