Last year I wrote about how I wanted to help my children focus on the small things that make them happy (inspired by Karin's Embrace Happy philosophy) and I shared the Happy Books that we made together for them to write their happy moments in there.I still encourage them to write in their Happy books and just looking at some of the entries makes me smile. This is my personal favourite from Miss Frugal who obviously didn't fancy our planned trip to a local museum recently: We went to the museum and it was shut! But can I do more to help my children find their own Happy?First of … [Read more...]
12 Apps your Teen can’t live without….
Before I start, this post isn't meant to be a debate about when children are old enough for phones or an opportunity to point out that we managed perfectly well without phones when we were younger. It's not even a discussion about whether children should be allowed on social media although points of view are more than welcome as always if you really have to get in to that whole debate on here. The whole point of this post is to share with you some of Miss Frugal's favourite apps from her phone. In fact, when I say I'm going to share ten apps that your tween can't live without I clearly … [Read more...]
Five Frugal things I’ve done this week to save money {6th Febuary 2015}….
I meant to start doing a 'Five Frugal things....' post every week but last week wasn't great for us as we were hit with a tummy bug that wiped us out but we're on the mend now so here I am again to share with you all five frugal things that I've done this week. Five frugal things I've done this week: 1. This is something I do every week but only realised what a habit it was when Master Frugal told me that he knew it was Sunday because the washing machine was on. Basically, I try to only wash on a Sunday and I do one white wash, one dark load and one colour load. By waiting until I have a … [Read more...]
#ThriftyThursday – Do you take notice of the best before and use by dates?
The amount of times I've seen questions in various online forums recently about whether or not something is safe to eat has really got me thinking lately about Best Before and Use By dates. It drives me mad when someone answers 'sniff it and see' to a question about whether out of date chicken is OK to eat because I would never serve food that's past it's use by date to anyone. I know I'm probably in the minority and most people would be OK with it as long as it looks and smells OK but I just couldn't!I still buy food in the reduced section at the supermarket though, I just freeze … [Read more...]
How to be ‘down with the kids’ – A lesson from my nine year old….
This week, Master Frugal told me I was quite a cool Mum but that if I wanted to be really 'down with the kids' then there were certain things I had to learn. He very kindly offered to teach me what I needed to know and I thought some of you might benefit from my new found knowledge so here we go, here's his top tips for being a supercool parent.Anything that claims to be cool is absolutely not cool. In fact, a bag that Miss Frugal loved instantly became a no-no when we saw that the company were advertising it as a 'Super Cool Satchel'It is not cool to shorten names for places. … [Read more...]
Tried and Tested – Morrisons Sweet and Sour Sauce….
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the Tesco value curry sauce jar as part of my new tried and tested feature where we will be trying lots of different value products and reporting back. I was really pleased at how positive the comments were as I was half expecting lots of people to say that cooking from scratch was the only right thing to do.Today I wanted to tell you about our experiences with the M Savers Sweet and Sour sauce from Morrisons which we bought for the bargain price of 25p!I completely failed with taking note of the ingredients for this but I did read through them … [Read more...]
