I am loving Master Frugal's new found love of cooking - he just found some carrots in the fridge and asked if he could make carrot cake. It would be rude to say no to a request like that, wouldn't it?For the carrot cake: 2 eggs 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 grated carrots 185g melted butter 160g brown sugar 135g s/r flourFor the tangerine buttercream: 175g icing sugar 50g butter the juice of 1 small tangerine (or if it's really juicy just use half) the grated zest of 1 small tangerineStir together the eggs, grated carrot, … [Read more...]
The swimming award that never was….
Master Frugal loves going swimming but no matter what we do to help him learn to swim properly it just doesn't seem to click and he really doesn't want to go to swimming lessons - we went a couple of times and he hated every minute as he says he felt like everyone was watching him!He can swim underwater really well and has mastered the perfect handstand and underwater somersaults - it's just the actual swimming part that he struggles with.Anyway, this week he's been doing an intensive swimming course with his school which involves him going swimming every afternoon for two weeks and … [Read more...]

A new found love of cooking….
Master Frugal is quite a complex child. He's happy and extremely loving but he tends to over think things and has a habit of worrying about things that he really doesn't need to worry about. This means that I often look over at him and he'll be sat with a very serious expression on his face which makes me a little sad too.I never make a big deal out of it as I know it's just the way he is but he's clearly aware of it himself as his school New Year's Resolution was to 'lighten up and chill out'. He stood up in front of assembly at school to tell everyone that's what he was going to … [Read more...]
#PerfectSunday – Cinnamon Toast Recipe….
I work on a Saturday about once a month usually and I always find on those weekends, because I only have the Sunday off, I'm determined to make Sunday a great day. Today's no exception and we've started the day in the best possible way - with cinnamon toast for breakfast. It's more like cinnamon eggy bread really but it's absolutely delicious and this morning, Master Frugal decided he wanted to make it himself so I didn't even have to make it (although I did do the actual cooking).Cinnamon toast is one of those things that most people know how to make but rarely do so I'm going to … [Read more...]
Teaching Children about Money – Important lessons learned this week….
As another week of 2014 speeds by us, it's time for this week's teaching children about money post. This week it's all about saving versus spending and is inspired by a couple of interesting conversation I had with the kids last weekend.Miss Frugal has been after a bottle of the new One Direction perfume since it first came out but I've held off buying it on principle because, as I've said before, it annoys me that it's priced so highly when it's aimed at young girls. It was on her Christmas list but after I explained that if I bought her a bottle, it would be the smallest bottle (3oml) … [Read more...]
