Convenience - This morning, like most mornings, I had to have both the kids and myself ready to leave the house by half past seven in order to get them to breakfast club so I could get to work on time. After school, I picked up one child, came home for half an hour and then went back to pick up the other one. I then picked up Mr Frugal from work and we came home, all hungry and ready for tea. I had tea on the table in about ten minutes because I'd taken two minutes (literally that long) to add a couple of handfuls of frozen onions, a packet of mince, some water and stick cubes to the slow … [Read more...]

How I encouraged my children to become happy readers who love books….
I know I've said this before but Master Frugal was once very behind his classmates in his reading and although I tried not to let it bother me, it did. It really did. More so because reading is so essential to everything in life that it was starting to seriously affect his confidence which in turn affected all other areas of his life - the day he said to me that he thought he was stupid my heart broke. But things improved rapidly when he was selected for his schools Reading Recovery program which involves one on one tutoring for an hour a day every day for a full term. Whatever was … [Read more...]
This week’s mini meal plan and my recipe for slow cooker chilli….
As of Friday afternoon, Mr Frugal and I have a week off work together. It's actually the week we booked in so we could have a week's family holiday and we were intending to take the kids out of school and go away for a week somewhere nice and warm. But then the rules changed and we can't take them out of school for the full week so we're just going to have a nice weekend away this weekend starting as soon as they finish school on Friday. We haven't decided yet what we're doing or where we're going but we definitely doing something! So our meal plan is only Monday to Thursday this week … [Read more...]
I give up – I NEED to meal plan or I spend a fortune….
I know I said that I don't usually do much of a meal plan over the Summer Holidays but it's driving me mental at the minute.Meal times are usually laid back in the Summer because (a) I never know how many we're having for tea, (b) we don't really stick to a schedule as we like to be out as much as possible and (c) we don't know whether our day might involve an impromptu picnic (which would usually come out of the food budget). But this Summer, I feel like my food budget is just running away from me and not only are we spending way more than we should be spending, we're also at the shop … [Read more...]
Den Building with BattleBox….
Last week we had an amazing day out in London as guests of Battlebox. We got our camo make-up on and managed to build ourselves a den to be proud off. In fact, I'm almost positive that ours was the best one (don't tell the other lovely bloggers who were there that I said that though) because not only did we get a lot of help Scott the survival expert, ours also had the added bonus of having a carpet made of magazines as Miss Frugal didn't want to sit on the muddy ground! We had a fantastic day and it was lovely to speak to the creator of Battlebox to hear why she started the company. It … [Read more...]
This week’s meal plan – the good weather edition….
You may have noticed that there's an unfamiliar looking yellow ball in the sky giving off heat. That would be the Sun and it's so rarely seen in the UK that our meals this week are mostly cooked in the slow cooker so we can make the most of it while we have it.I can prepare everything on the morning before I go to work and then the dinner can be cooking all day in the slow cooker. That means we can go straight out after school to the park or the beach or wherever and know that the tea will be ready whenever we get in. Voila! Sunday Slow cooker brisketMonday Mini muffin pizzas - … [Read more...]
