After last weeks attempt to follow the Sainsbury's Feed your family for £50 challenge, I've decided that we do need a bit of variety on our menu. Apparently nine out of ten people make the same eight meals over and over again and looking back at my recent menu plans it looks like I'm one of those nine. Not that there's anything wrong with that but we did enjoy the variety of last week so I'm going to try and introduce some new meals to my rather limited repetoire....Monday: Sweet and sour chickenTuesday: Macaroni cheeseWednesday: Jambalaya Thursday: Sausage pie (see … [Read more...]

Family, Friendly, Frugal Meals – Chicken and Mushroom Pasta….
Last week's meal plan went OK but I had to nip to the shop twice midweek - once for dog food and the second time for baking supplies for the bake sale at work that I promised I'd cook for. Both times I bought a few extras which meant I ended the week over budget but we're getting closer to it so I'm not too dissappointed ;-) Here's this weeks meal plan:Saturday: Shepherds PieSunday: Sunday Lunch - Chicken, roasties, veg and Yorkshire puddingsMonday: Chicken and mushroom pasta (see below) using up the leftover chicken from Sunday.Tuesday: Macaroni cheeseWednesday: … [Read more...]
Family Friendly, Frugal Meals – Chilli….
Inspired by the lovely Jen at the Madhouse whose brilliant article about feeding your family on £50.00 a week has just been published in the Guardian, I'm determined to reduce the amount of money that we spend on food each month. We have a grocery budget of £250.00 a month at the moment which is for 2 adults and 2 children. This covers all of our meals at home, packed lunches for me and the kids as well as all of our other household stuff. We used to be pretty good at sticking to the budget but lately I've been so busy that I haven't been doing our shopping online or been meal planning as … [Read more...]
It’s a Hard Life….
Master Frugal got a letter today, a special letter that came in a homemade envelope and was hand delivered to his desk at afternoon playtime. He was the only one to get one of these letters and I can imagine the big smile on his face as he opened the letter........I couldn't help but laugh when he showed me the letter - it was from his now ex-girlfriend, who decided that she didn't want to be his girlfriend anymore ;-( On School Disco day as well, poor little thing. He's not the only one with relationship problems though - the boy that Miss Frugal is mad about has told her that he … [Read more...]
Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookies….
When I read that this some bloggers in the US have declared this Saturday to be World Nutella Day and I saw that the theme for this week's Friday Club was Cakes and Cookies, I knew exactly which recipe I was going to share with you - Nutella Chocolate Chip Cookies. 125g plain flour 50g butter 1 egg 50g brown sugar 50g sugar 200g chocolate chips 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons Nutella As with all my favourite recipes, this one is super simple. Everything goes into the mixing bowl at once, mix it together and blob onto a greased baking … [Read more...]
The Perfect Pudding for Winter….
I've just had a tidy out of my kitchen cupboards! I'm not sure what came over me - I went in to the kitchen to make a cuppa, noticed how messy the cutlery drawer was and it just spiralled out of control from there.... I found all sorts of weird and wonderful things, including cider vinegar that I have no recollection of buying, vanilla sugar that I forgot I had and lots of herbs and spices that I have no clue what to do with. One thing I did find that I was quite pleased with was a small amount of pudding rice so I thought that I would cook the kids some homemade rice pudding for after … [Read more...]
