1) I had to buy the last of Master Frugal's new school uniform this week and although it's pretty hard to save money when most of it is compulsory, I did manage to save a little bit. I have no idea why he needs both a short and long sleeved top along with a hoody but I was a good parent and bought them all along with the school socks! I drew the line at the shorts and the tracksuit bottoms as the PE teacher told me that he'd never wear the tracksuit bottoms and any shorts were OK as long as they were black. He has a pair of black nike shorts that he's going to wear and a pair of plain black … [Read more...]

The other side of Football….
The violent scenes shown on TV this week of the clashes between English and Russian football fans have made me feel both sad and angry and whilst I don't claim to know who's at fault or why the fans are rioting, I do know that many innocent people have been caught up in the clashes when all they wanted to do was watch the team they love play the game they love.I've heard people saying that the violence makes them 'ashamed to be English', that it's 'typical of the English fans' and even one comment on Facebook that 'English fans shouldn't be allowed to travel'. Really? Do people really … [Read more...]
Five Fabulously Frugal Things I’ve done this week {3rd June 2016}….
This week has been a pretty good week in our house - both in the frugal and the family sense. ;-)1) For the last couple of months I've been organising a charity football match for work and I'll be honest, I've been losing a little bit of sleep as I was worrying that we'd bitten off more than we could chew and that it would all go wrong on the day. I couldn't have been more wrong as I couldn't have ever imagined a more successful day - starting with Master Frugal scoring a penalty at his beloved Riverside Stadium and ending with Mr Frugal scoring the winning goal in the final minutes of … [Read more...]
Days Out: Middleham Castle and Forbidden Corner….
Last weekend we were looking for a bit of a special day out to celebrate the end of SATs for Master Frugal and the end of a hard exam week for Miss Frugal and after much debate we decided to visit Middleham Castle and Forbidden Corner. Middleham Castle Middleham Castle is somewhere I've wanted to visit for years now as I've read about it's history as a setting in a number of different books. It was the childhood home of King Richard III (also known as the Kingmaker) and is steeped in history and tragedy. It's probably one of my favourite places that we've been since we joined English … [Read more...]
Small things that make me smile {May 2016}….
This last month has been a great month with some brilliant stand out happy moments! We started the month with a cheeky long weekend to Cyprus for Miss Frugal and I which I know I may have mentioned a few times on here already( here and here mainly ) so I won't go into detail again but I will say that those five days were perfect. I can't remember ever feeling as relaxed and considering one of us was a hormonal teenager, you might be surprised to hear that there wasn't a single argument, mood or sulk over the whole time we were there! We've had some lovely days out together as a … [Read more...]
From boring to beautiful – how we transformed a bedside cabinet on a budget….
A little while ago, Miss Frugal announced that she wanted a more grown up bedroom as she felt that hers was too babyish (despite the fact we'd only decorated it last year. Apparently she now hated the turquoise and pink theme she'd picked out not that long ago and she wanted to go for all white. The first problem (for her, not me) is that I'm planning to do Master Frugal's room next month as a surprise when he goes away on is school residential and I don't want her to have another big room makeover before his is done.Plus the fact that she only just had it done means that her room was … [Read more...]
