Thanks to a rather expensive (but apparently essential) car repair last week, we need to try and spend as little money as possible between now and pay-day. That means that this weeks meal plan is going to be a 'whatever we've already got in' week. Luckily, my freezer has quite a lot of reduced bargains that we've picked up from the supermarket at the end of the day recently so we shouldn't starve....Monday: Sausage, egg, chips and beans.Tuesday: Macaroni cheese.Wednesday: Salmon Fishcakes in buns with homemade potato wedges and salad.Thursday: Either minced beef and onions … [Read more...]
Not so quick but very yummy Prawn and Pea Risotto….
It's not often Mr Frugal takes much of an interest in cooking or shopping (although he does do all the ironing) but when I picked him up from work a couple of nights ago, he had a big pack of raw King Prawns that he'd seen on the reduced bay on his way through the shop.So instead of the planned ham and mushroom oven baked risotto, I thought I'd try to recreate a prawn and pea risotto that I'd tried a while ago at a friends house and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, so pleased that I thought I'd share....Prawn and Pea Risotto 700ml vegetable stock 250g Arborio rice 1 chopped … [Read more...]
Family Friendly Frugal Meals – Homemade Burgers….
I never bothered with a meal plan last week as I was feeling a bit bleugh (if that's even a word), and as a result, without even looking at the receipts from last week's food shopping I can tell you that we went way over our weekly budget. As we didn't have a meal plan to stick to, we bought random things when we did our main shop and then got home and realised that the things we'd bought didn't really make up a weeks worth of meals. This meant that through the week we ended up making two extra trips to the shop for extra bits, both times buying more than what we went for. So this week, … [Read more...]

A Frugal New Year – Let’s start with meal planning….
Meal planning is probably the single biggest change I made when I started out on my frugal journey and it's something that I continue to do (almost) every week. I'm not perfect though and if I'm honest, there are plenty of times when we don't stick to the plan for one reason or another but on the whole, we do quite well and have managed to reduce our food shopping bill by a fair bit.I'm not going to insult your intelligence by telling you what meal planning is or how to do it but I will tell you how I do it and hopefully, if you meal plan too, you might share how you plan your meals in … [Read more...]
Family Friendly Frugal Meals – Sausage and Bean Casserole….
I didn't do too well at sticking to last weeks meal plan I'm afraid.... I *may* have even substituted one night for a takeaway and another for egg, chips and beans ;-)I've had a stern word with myself and am ready to go again so here's what we'll be eating this week:Monday - Fray Bentos pies with chips and peas. I love Fray Bentos pies so I stocked up when I found them on offer last week.Tuesday - Chicken and egg fried rice for the adults and fish fingers, mash and beans for the kids.Wednesday - Macaroni CheeseThursday - Mussels with crusty bread and french fries. Pasta … [Read more...]
