After making lasagne yesterday I still have half a slow cooker filled with bolognaise so I thought I might turn that into a nice pot of winter warming chilli.I added 1tsp of chilli, 1tsp of paprika and 1tsp of cumin along with a tin of baked beans (my family hate kidney beans) and cooked it all in the slow cooker again for a few hours.Result - Gorgeous.I think we'll have this instead of curry tomorrow night.UPDATE - This was gorgeous with some reduced pilau rice (10p from Asda) and a reduced naan bread each (5p each). Gorgeous and a bargain! … [Read more...]
Nice and Spicy….
Following my spice trauma recently and my resolution to expand my culinary repotoire (now there's a big word) I have sorted out my herbs and spices. They are all labelled (using Tippex and a paintbrush) and lined up on the kitchen windowsill until I find somewhere better for them.I am determined to learn how to cook with these spices so I am going to cook a different recipe every week using them. So far I have used oregano by sprinkling it on the Homemade pizza for Master Frugal's tea yesterday. I added thyme, oregano and chilli to the Jambalaya last night and cinnamon in the choccy cinnamon … [Read more...]
Tonight’s Tea….
Some people (the real Domestic Goddess' of this world) can make up recipes as they go along, they are able to just throw some ingredients together and make a michelin starred meal. I have never been able to do this, I can only just put together a nice meal with a recipe to follow! That's why I am so pleased with what I made today. Miss Frugal declared that she doesn't like homemade pizza anymore and couldn't possible eat it for tea (does she not realise I have a meal plan to stick to) so we decided on salmon for her along with the leftover macaroni cheese. The only way I have ever cooked salmon … [Read more...]
Choccy Cinnamon Cake….

Homemade Macaroni Cheese….
I have just made macaroni cheese from scratch for the first time and everyone (even Master Frugal) loved it! That doesn't happen often in this house.I am feeling like a real Domestic Goddess at the moment, although I'm sure that won't last long as I have loads of jobs to do before the kids go to bed. Here's my recipe:300g (ish) Macaroni800ml Milk50g Butter50g Plain flour300g Grated CheeseHamWhile you are cooking the macaroni in one pan, melt the butter in another. When the butter has melted, mix in the flour and stir it for a few minutes. Gradually mix in the milk and keep stirring until it … [Read more...]
Homemade Mint Crisps….
The jury is still out on my homemade mint crisps. They were fun to make and tasted nice but I don't think you could bring them out at the end of a dinner party and wow your guests (not that I ever have dinner parties lol). They were so simple to make, all you need is a biggish bar of dark chocolate and a packet of extra strong mints. Using a rolling pin bash the extra strong mints into little pieces, I left a few larger bits to make it more crunchy - Don't do this as Mr Frugal nearly lost his tooth biting into one! Then melt the chocolate in the microwave (or the old fashioned way if you are … [Read more...]
