I found a huge bar of chocolate in the cupboard on Friday night and I was sooooo tempted to eat it - which wouldn't have helped my diet in any way! After sitting and staring at it (whilst drooling) for a while wondering if a big bar of dairy milk was worth breaking my diet over, I decided to melt it down and make a frugal family style fondue. I didn't do anything fancy, I just melted the chocolate in the microwave and chopped up some fruit. Arm the kids with a fork each and you have two happy little people.Funnily enough we went shopping yesterday and saw a Cadbury's chocolate fondue set for … [Read more...]
American Style Pancakes….
AKA - Them ones that MacDonalds make ;-)Don't you just love kids and their honesty? I told them that we were having pancakes for breakfast this morning and they had the cheek to say they would rather go to MacDonalds! Apparently, MacDonalds pancakes are much nicer than mine.Never one to be outdone, I decided that I was going to make MacDonald's stlye pancakes better than even MacDonalds could make them so I sent them off to play on the Wii and turned to my trusty cookbook collection for some inspiration. After all, I have about a million so I knew one of them would have a recipe in it that … [Read more...]
Homemade Tortilla Style Wraps….
We had wraps for tea tonight and in true frugal style we even made our own wraps.... They were easy to make, cost practically nothing and have just been declared as 'awesome' by the kids.Homemade wraps350g of plain flour1 teaspoon of salt30ml of olive oil130ml of warm waterI love recipes like this - so simple that Miss Frugal can do all of the measuring and mixing. She takes it so seriously and the measurements have to be exact. I'm more of a 'that'll do' kind of a cook which probably accounts for some of my more un-domestic goddess moments.Throw all the ingredients together in a mixing … [Read more...]
I am never going to be a Domestic Goddess….
I am never, ever going to be a Domestic Goddess - No matter how hard I try, I always end up doing something wrong.I have just tried to make cinnamon buns from here and I managed to mess up a really simple recipe. It was all going so well and they are in the oven now but I have a feeling that they are not going to taste nice as I forgot to activate the dried yeast. Actually I didn't forget, I just didn't have a clue that you have to mix dried yeast with water to activate it. I just poured it in to my mixture and only realised that I had a problem when the dough didn't rise as much as I was … [Read more...]
Toad in the hole….
I feel so full.We have just had toad in the hole for tea with mini roasties, mash, carrots, broccoli and gravy. It was gorgeous and the kids both cleared their plates (which doesn't happen often believe me). In our pre-frugal days we would have just ordered a take away on a Saturday night and I can honestly say that we all enjoyed our tea tonight more than any take away.To make the mini roasties, I chop up some potatoes into small chucks and par boil them for about five minutes. Then I drain them and put them back in the empty pan, I season them and then drizzle them with a healthy amount … [Read more...]
Microwave Sponge Pudding….
This microwave sponge pudding is one of the easiest, yet tastiest puddings that we've ever made! We've been making our microwave sponge pudding for a good 10 years or more now and I actually first shared this recipe more than ten years ago on here. TEN YEARS! I shared it with the most ridiculously small photos and barely any explanation about why we made it so often so I thought I'd dust off the old post and give it a new lease of life today. Our version of a jammy microwave sponge pudding was one of the first recipes that Miss Frugal ever learned to make … [Read more...]
