I usually like to while away my Thursday mornings lazing on the settee watching daytime TV as it’s my one morning of me time. It’s my day off work, the kids are at school and Mr Frugal is in be recovering from his nightshift so I make the most of this time by doing absolutely nothing.
This morning, I was only half paying attention to Market Kitchen on the TV while trying to catch up on everyone’s fab blog posts from the last couple of days when I heard Andi Peters (of childrens tele fame) saying that he could help me to save a fortune on my food shopping. Well, that got my full attention and I was quite impressed with what he said.
The savings can be had by shopping on line at companies like Approved Food who specialise in food that has passed it’s ‘Best Before’ date or products that have a short shelf life. They also sell lines that have been discontinued and products in older packaging.
According to Andi Peters (so it must be true lol) the difference between ‘Use by’ and ‘Best Before’ is that any products with a ‘Best Before’ date can still be consumed safely after the date shown but they may not have be at their best, hence ‘Best Before’. Products that are labelled with a ‘Use By’ date should not be used after this date as they could make you ill.
I have heard about this before ages ago but I didn’t realise how much you could save – I might put an order in, although I’ll have to keep it secret as Mr Frugal is extremely particular about his dates (quite anal actually lol).
It can be our secret!
