For those of you who have a Smartphone but don’t have unlimited free texts or calls there’s some great apps around that allow you to get free calls or free texts to other users who also have the app downloaded.
The one I use at the moment is called Viber which looks to be available to the majority of phone types. It basically lets you send texts and make free calls to other Viber users wherever they are in the world. It’s free to download and one of the reasons I like it is that it’s ad free so you don’t keep having to dismiss annoying adverts for other apps! Viber works by connecting to Wifi or 3G to send your texts and make calls and apparently this means that your calls are HD quality although I’m not sure I would know HD quality if it hit me over the head. All I know is that I downloaded the app, it synced with my address book and gave me a list of my friends who were already on Viber and now I call and text them for free.
If you have unlimited calls and it’s just free messaging that you’re after then you could try Whatsapp which is what I used to use before I discovered Viber. Whatsapp currently costs 69p but once you’ve downloaded it you can send messages to any user who has the app installed. I used to like it for sending MMS messages as I take so many photos and I like to send some of them on to Mr Frugal and you can do it for free using Whatsapp.
The third app that I’ve used in the past that allows free calls and messaging is Skype but if I’m honest it’s been a while since I tried the app as I deleted it when I installed Whatsapp. Skype gives you free video calls to other Skype users as well as free instant messaging. I know you can also pay for additional services like cheaper calls to landlines but I’ve never really looked into this myself.
So now you can get free texts and calls, you can stay in touch for less 😉
