One of the places we’ve been wanting to visit since we got our English Heritage membership last year is Tynemouth Priory which is billed on the website as being a perfect place for a fun family day out. It was only last month that we finally got around to going though and I’m so pleased we did as it’s a beautiful place and we’ll definitely be going back for another visit over the Summer.
Tynemouth Priory and Castle has a really interesting history and we (by we, I mean Master and Mr Frugal) enjoyed learning about it – it was originally an Anglo-Saxon settlement but over the years it’s been an Anglican monastery, a royal castle, an artillery fort and a coastal defence. There’s also a gun battery built underground into the cliffs which was designed to defend the Tyne in the First and Second World Wars.
Miss Frugal was way too busy climbing and exploring to be take time to learn about the history of the place and I didn’t know what to photograph first as it’s such a beautiful place.
We used our English Heritage membership to visit Tynemouth Priory and Castle but if you don’t have a membership or you don’t want to get one then it will cost you £15.10 for a family of 2 adults and up to three children including gift aid.
Tynemouth itself is a really nice little town and the main street is filled with pubs and cafes with outside seating which would be amazing to sit and people watch from if only you could get a seat – we had no chance on the day we went as the sun was shining and everyone wanted to be outside. 😉
We didn’t even go down to the beach although it did look beautiful as we decided to drive home and go to the beach near our house instead but it really did look like gorgeous so if you do visit Tynemouth Priory, don’t forget to take your beach stuff.
