Today I’m going to share the cheats way to making a batch of super cute unicorn cupcakes!
Unicorns are definitely the ‘in’ thing right now aren’t they?
I jumped on the bandwagon and made my unicorn fudge, some unicorn bath salts and even some colourful unicorn cookie dough and in my wisdom when I was planning this month’s posts, I decided to have a go at making unicorn cupcakes to share with you.
My blog post planning process usually takes place once a month and I’ll sit down and plan all of the posts I want to share the following month. These are usually random ideas that I haven’t really thought through – they’re just vague ideas that I add to my phone or my notebook through the month when I think of something that I think might work.
My planning session consists of me going through all the ideas, adding the good ones to my blog calendar and making sure I know what I need to get in order for the post to happen.
Unicorn cupcakes were added to the list when I was at the Westfield Shopping centre in June when I saw some beautifully iced unicorn cupcakes on one of the food stands. I’m not going to lie, they were super expensive and I rather smugly thought to myself as I was typing ‘unicorn cupcakes’ into my phone that I could easily do just as good a job for much less.
So, I got to my blog planning session at the end of June and assigned a day to unicorn cupcakes. At this point, I had a good search through Pinterest to get some ideas on how to make the perfect unicorn cupcake but honestly, they were all way above my icing skill level.
There were some beautiful unicorn cupcakes but I had to be honest and admit that anything I attempted wouldn’t turn out anything like what I pictured in my head. I very nearly gave up at this point but I decided that if they were above my level then the chances are they were a little bit unachievable for some of you guys too.
I decided to find a way to ‘cheat’ at making a unicorn cupcake so people like me can whip up a batch of super cute unicorn cupcakes with the best of them.
After some searching, my cheat came in the form of this little unicorn cupcake kit from Amazon…
It’s basically 12 cupcake case wrappers and 12 flower unicorn horn toppers and it cost less than the cost of one of the cupcakes that originally inspired the post.
I wasn’t sure what the quality would be like at that price but when the kit came, I was really surprised at how good it looked. The cupcake wrappers are great quality and are reversible with one unicorn side and one rainbow side and the unicorn horn toppers are really pretty with lots of shiny colour on them.
I just used my standard cupcake recipe and mixed up some buttercream so the cooking part was super easy and then it was just a case of adding the unicorn sparkle!
Look how amazing they look – my unicorn cupcakes actually look as good as they do in the picture which is rare when I make something. 😉
