There are so many reasons why I miss my Mam that I couldn’t possibly list them all here and just when I think I’m doing OK, another reason for me to miss her comes along and I feel sad all over again. It happens quite often to be honest but the most recent time was just a couple of weeks ago.
Miss Frugal asked me to teach her how to knit as she wants to knit a baby blanket and I thought I’d give it a go as my Mam taught me how to knit when I was her age. I stupidly thought it was like riding a bike and that once I got the needles and wool in my hands, that I’d remember what to do.
Except it’s not like riding a bike at all and once we bought the needles and wool, I had no idea how to even get started. It hit me that if my Mam was still here that it would be her who would be teaching her grand daughter to knit which made me sad, very sad.
I had no idea what to do so I temporarily distracted Miss Frugal and we did something else together until it was time for her to go to bed. The next day, I was late in from work and I came in after a very long day to find her sitting on the settee knitting away like a pro.
It turns out that she’s decided to take matters into her own hands and after watching some YouTube tutorials she’d taught herself to knit and so far, she’s doing a great job making squares for the blanket she’s aiming to make. She’s even taught me how to do it so I can finish her squares off when she goes to bed!
But even YouTube can only go so far to helping us.
A quick trip to Hobbycraft last week proved how much we had to learn as we were looking for some chunkier wool for her blanket in the hope it would help her knit the squares quicker (she only has a month to make it as it’s a Christening gift) and we had no clue. I mean seriously, have you ever seen all of the different types of wool there are! And then you need to find the right knitting needles for the wool you have which is a whole other conundrum.
So, in the absence of our own knitting Nana, we’re going to go along to our local knitting club this week to see if we can find one (or more) to adopt. We’re hoping someone will take pity on us and be willing to ask the many questions we have although I’m pretty sure Miss Frugal will be their youngest member and I’ll be the least talented. 😉
Wish us luck!
